what i learned- never use spray paint on styrofoam, it wuold melt it.
To create the duvet, I when through a variety of options for the colours and textile I wanted for the top of it. I knew I wanted three different colours as if the three brothers couldn’t settle on one colour they collectively like so got one with three colours that suited each rat. The colours I settled on are shades of blue and a beige. The middle is a shade basically devoid of colour for my main character who has lost whose world has become bleak after the loss. I got some of this material from the local charity shop, they started off as shirts made of a fabric that had a similar weight and stitch to look they belong together. The navy blue section is a fancy napkin and the backing is calico, inside the duvet is two layers of wadding (used for quilts) sewn to the back of the patchwork top and calico bottom. Leaving a space in the middle for some toy stuffing, in order to pad it out so it looks more like a duvet. I also lined the duvet with 5mm thick aluminium wire so that I can have some possibility whilst animating my rat character in bed.

Using the windows from one of the rooms in my house in Norwich, I drew up my own windows and cut three of them out of mount board, trying my best to cut out spaces for them on an a1 sheet of mount board for which I will use on one of the walls for my bedroom set. I also cut out perspect for the backing of the window so that when I shine the light through it, it will look less intense like that of a window. I also found two wallpapers on Google that I liked, editing them in Photoshop so they were both A3 size, would like to print them when I’m back at uni to see if they are good for the job.
I had an idea of the room my character goes to when he falls asleep, I was thinking of having three portraits of the rats hung up on the walls with scratched out eyes, which I then illustrated on Photoshop to see what they looked like. I was imaging them more like family paintings but I’m not a painter nor am I digital painter so I wasn’t sure how to get the effect I really wanted. I think its a little over the top anyway but would be good to draw up the room with them in later on to get a better idea.
Wallpaper for bedroom set
When thinking about how I will dress my bedroom’s set walls, looking at a few different websites, trying to find 1/6 scale wallpaper. They were pretty difficult to come by and fairly expensive so I will probably just print my own wallpaper at uni, either using a striped print online or something I’ve drawn up on photoshop.

I also thought I’d look up options of lighting my set with little hanging lights or a bedside lamp, which is why I included the info below. I don’t think I will have time for it and I wouldn’t want those lights on in my scene because my character is attempting to sleep. It is something I would love to look further into in the future though.

A few weeks ago my tutor, Peter, suggested that I look into fiberoptics as they are pretty commonly used in industry but I forgot to research (sorry!). I think they would have been too small for the job I needed them to do but it’s still interesting to research these things for future reference and possible use.
