If you actually look at my blog you may have noticed a post about The League of Extraordinary Gentleman that contained a joke about it being a fan fiction.  I still think it's interesting that such a popular and well-written work is full of "borrowed" characters.  Looking over my notes from Science and Literature, I noticed another fan fiction-esque book.  Edison's Conquest of Mars by Garrett P. Serviss was written as a sequel to H. G. Wells's War of the Worlds.  This sequel was not authorized by Wells and, in fact, the books' themes are almost contradictory.  Because of these facts and that scientist Thomas Edison is the hero of the story, I think it's safe to call this a fan fiction (Serviss even wrote himself in).
