How to Start Your Blog, and Start it Right

The thought of starting a blog is admittedly totally and completely daunting. What am I going to say? Will people want to read it? Am I even going to have time to keep up with it? It seems like an impossible challenge. But here’s the truth — it’s completely in your grasp and can have amazing benefits.
First thing’s first — choosing the right platform for your business.
The different blogging platforms have a lot of pros and cons. If you imagine your blog is going to be very text-heavy with long, in-depth posts that advises and provides guidance to your readers, then I would recommendWordPress. It’s an extremely popular platform, is a great product, and is ideal for those wordier posts.
However, and this is the route I would recommend more for people who are just getting started and are unsure what they’ll blog about, try out Tumblr. Tumblr is literally the easiest way to blog. It’s a bit more image-heavy (which makes your blog look interesting) and couldn’t be simpler to use.
People read blogs to get information, learn about businesses, and because they find it interesting. Think about your audience and what they’re going to want to read — keep it light at times, crack a few jokes, let people see your personality. Contract work is so personal that it can only help! Maybe you’ve just finished up some work in a client’s home, why not take a photo of the finished product as well as one of you and the client and post them to your blog? Easy, interesting content is what’s going to be the key to your success.
Highlight your blog on your other social networks.
You have a community of followers there, so why not cross promote? Using a tool like Postling it’s easy to write your blog post and then highlight your new content on your other social networks, all from one place. Even if you don’t do this through a management tool like Postling, you should still spread the wealth! Maybe someone tweets a relevant question. Why not respond to them and say you discussed that in your blog post and send them a link? Let people know the content exists!Â
Do you already have a blog? If so, what platform is it on? Do you struggle with content? If you don’t have a blog, what’s been your biggest barrier to starting one?
