Design Origins:

Superior is based on a snake. Given its grass typing, it might specifically be a tree snake, vine snake or green snake. It also has elements of some other reptiles, such as legless lizards or Asian grass lizards. Its head shape, along with its collar extensions, may draw from a snake’s shed skin, a cobra’s hood, or the bird of paradise flower, which is also known as "Strelitzia," named after Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Its ability to amplify sunlight in its body may be a reference to King Louis XIV, a French king who referred to himself as “The Sun King”, while its white face may reference skin whitening, a fashion trend popular with 17th century European aristocrats. The dark green pattern on its chest forms a fleur-de-lis, a flower popular in coats of arms of European nations and families. Its ability to freeze with a glare may be a reference to the basilisk, a creature from European folklore which is known as the “King of Serpents”. It has basil-like leaves on its body which may be a pun on not only basilisk, but also Basileús, which is Greek for King.
