I just want to give a shout-out to Sergeant Detritus in Terry Pratchett’s “Discworld” books. As someone who is basically pretty darn smart but has wildly varying cognitive function depending on things like ME/CFS brainfog, seizures that leave me post-ictal (especially if I have lots), probable-ADHD concentration problems, etc., having a character whose own intellectual ability is also really variable and contingent is incredibly relatable and validating.
I spent most of yesterday in a seizure-related haze severe enough that I need a lot of care and support from my partner for some basic things, while also rather vaguely re-listening to the talking book of “Jingo” for the nth time. Detritus in the desert during the day was... An Mood. <3
I’m not like Detritus in most other respects (and I’m very very sceptical, shall we say, of the police in real life*), but oh goodness I’m grateful for that shouty troll sergeant right now. I grew up being convinced by others that being “bright” was about my only good quality, and coping emotionally as a middle-aged adult with sporadic cognitive function problems has been a challenge. A character for whom “intelligence” is not remotely a static quality, and who has his own problems coming to terms with this, is refreshing and comforting and genuinely helpful.
I hope that having written Detritus gave Pratchett some validation and comfort for grappling with the Alzheimer’s in his last years. And I’m enormously grateful to him.
*This is a massive understatement.
