When you try to learn a really tough piece of music, you have to approach it in two “phases”:

The first is when you’re actually trying to wrap your head around what it is the song is asking of you. You look at the note layout, the tempo, etc. and simply process it. You figure out where your hands are gonna go. You get used to playing those 2 measures consecutively. You just take all those notes and smash them together until they make sense.

“Phase two” is when you take that whole first phase and play it at a crazy slow tempo. Then you play it again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. Until it’s as easy as signing your name. Then you kick up the tempo and start phase two over.

...or it could just be me.

Whatever. My post, my approach.

I love playing guitar. I just do. Most of all, I love learning new things either on it or about it. Whether it’s a simple little jingle or an intricate composition, I just love breaking a song down.

Since YouTube musicians have been my thing lately, I decided to try my hand at learning Charlie Parra’s song “Punk vs. Metal”.

At first, I was all like “Hey, this isn’t too bad. There are odd counts here and there, but nothing too crazy.” Then I hit the solo...
