The Loneliest Girl In The Universe by Lauren James
Genre: Science Fiction
Can you fall in love with someone you’ve never met, never even spoken to – someone who is light years away?
Romy Silvers is the only surviving crew-member of a spaceship travelling to a new planet, on a mission to establish a second home for humanity amongst the stars. Alone in space, she is the loneliest girl in the universe until she hears about a new ship which has launched from Earth – with a single passenger on board. A boy called J.
Their only communication with each other is via email – and due to the distance between them, their messages take months to transmit across space. And yet Romy finds herself falling in love.
But what does Romy really know about J? And what do the mysterious messages which have started arriving from Earth really mean?
Sometimes, there’s something worse than being alone . . .
Review
I think I read science fiction rather rarely, I’m more focused on fantasy, so it’s saying something about a book when I pick it up instead of one of the ones filled with magical creatures. The short description just captured me, and I can happily report that I wasn’t disappointed at all. Actually, I managed to finish this book in one sitting!
I really liked the way Romy’s character was built, she felt very real and relatable overall - especially the fanfiction writing/reading to cope lol.
At first, I was a bit irritated by her anxieties and hopes, but they make sense in the bigger context, learning about what happened on her spaceship, and you also realise how very isolated she is and how naive because of that. Like, thinking that a guy six years older than her could be an equal partner and that it’ll be a big romance. But she’s only sixteen and grew up so sheltered… as I said, it all made sense in the big picture.
The whole setting and plot of the space mission is very well done, and the tension was held high until the very end by only revealing small bits at a time of what happened on the mission and led to Romy’s situation. Also, I liked the combination with the thriller-ish moments and the last chapters were absolutely breathtaking.
I loved this book, seriously, and if you like thrillers and/or sci fi, this could be your next book.

The books I completed in September. Not a lot of books but I tried to read a book a week and only achieved 3. I try my best but life/ work gets in the way. Being an adult sucks sometimes :p. And sometimes being honest I like to spend some time with my man and cuddle up to watch Supernatural ( We are so behind so trying to watch our box set to catch up for the new season, gives me an excuse to stare at Jensen Ackles).
Here are the links to my reviews: Marriage Made Me Do It Book Review: Running into Love Book Review: Cast in Angelfire – The Mage craft series.
Marriage made me do it – I really enjoyed this book, I remember reading it over a couple days in the garden. I could not put it down. I got completely lost in a housewives idea of the perfect life, however she wants to break the rules once her so called perfect husband cheats and gets a teenager pregnant. Such a twisted book.
Running into love – A beautiful love story, no horrible love triangles or dilema’s. Just two people falling for each other. I loved it.
Cast in Angelfire- A recent finish. A teen & YA book, not read these in a while. I liked it, obviously tamer than the books I normally read, but then I should have expected that. I did enjoy it though, I like getting lost in a fantasy.
September recap The books I completed in September. Not a lot of books but I tried to read a book a week and only achieved 3.
It’s September!!! That means it’s a themed month for us. Once again, we are doing a “back to school read” where we revisit a book from our youth.
This time we are reading “A Wrinkle In time” by Madeleine L'Engle. This is one of the few books I didn’t read in school and J did, so i’m excited to finally get to this book. (Also there is a movie coming up for it and it looks amazing?!?!)
Any way, get nostalgic and read with us! Come read with us! We’re thinking our chat will be on Monday, September 25th at 8pm est. So there is plenty of time. Grab the book on Amazon or at an indie book store near you!
