itās been a long while since heās trained like this in the first place, and even longer since he got to practice with someone who could actually put him in his place. sparring with peter is a welcome change when the last few sessions without him have been utterly disappointing. every predictable victory only served to prove that humans were terribly weak, and peter is one of the few to change that, heās one of the few humans who arenātĀ worthless.
eventually, though, the challenge peter gave him, the one cam was wanting,Ā eventually becomes an annoyance. he knows cam too well, can predict a little too much of everything ( and he might be cheating a little bit with that weird sixth sense of his, but who is cam to complain ); at some point, cam stopped viewing it as a friendly training session, and more like a competition. his pride was on the line, and like hell was he going to lose after coming so far.
finally, once every single muscle in his body is begging for him to just stop moving,Ā peter is the one who speaks up first. it takes a moment for the suggestionā no, the demand, to register, but once it does, that only makes it worse. technically heās won this one-sided game of his, but what good is a victory is itās just handed to him? whatās the point of celebrating if he hasnāt earned it?
ā last time i checked... ā he trails off and takes a second to attempt to balance himself, to pull his thoughts out of the fuzziness in his head. somewhere in there, soren threatens to force him to slow down by themselves, and cam is quick to ignore them as usual.Ā ā last time i checked, you hadnāt listened the last... what, three, four? times i told you to take it easy. and now you want me to listen when you say the same?Ā hypocrite.Ā ā of course, patrolling new york as spider-man and ending up hurt wasnāt anything like cam pushing himself to the limit simply because he could, but in his defense, peter should know better than to expect fair comparisons from him by now.
once heās regained his balance and his lungs have mostly stopped burning, cam sends peter the most unimpressed look he can manage with an annoyed huff to accompany it. had he wanted to sell the act a bit more, he wouldāve been a little more dramatic about it, but it turns out that hours of training will wear one out... who knew?Ā ā tell you what, kid. letās say i can take a break when i either canāt fight anymore, or i win fair and square. sound good? ā heās not sure why heās asking, really; they both know he isnāt going to listen to any valid reasoning.
