TLDR: Dont implement elongated and drastic tempos to get more gains: intensity will suffer and the opposite effect will happen. FULL: Do you manipulate tempo? Tempo, simply put, is the speed of your repetition on the various parts of the lift. Do you go fast on the concentric portion of your lifts? Slow? What about the eccentric? Do you think manipulating tempo is going to drastically get you more gains? If so, why? I know that's a lot of questions; we know that intensity (of effort and %1rm) and volume are key factors in whether or not your training is going to induce muscular hypertrophy. If your training is not hard enough (intensity) or if you dont do enough of it (volume) you wont make optimal gains or you might not make any gains at all. So how does tempo play into this? When your tempo is altered drastically, as in increasing the duration of time under tension, SOMETHING else has to "take a hit". And that something else is intensity. For example, some people may alter their tempo by going very slowly on the eccentric portion of the lift (the "lowering" portion). Think about it: if you increase your time under tension drastically this way, you HAVE to lower the load compared to the same lift done on a much lower TUT. You are now doing a lighter load at a higher TUT vs a heavier load at a lower TUT. Which is better for hypertophy? It depends on the extremes taken, but how I usually see it, I'd definitely go with the latter. As TUT goes up, intensity (%1rm) has to go down. There is point where if you go too light, TUT can't make up for the decrease in load in regards to gains!
