This week, my homework was to write a satire. I chose nonprofit funding. Technically we’re supposed to be writing sketch comedy but I did an Adam Ruins Everything-ish piece because that’s what I have always found to be the most powerful thing about comedy: the ability to highlight, engage, and educate.
Anyways, the feedback I got was, “this was not quite the homework assignment, but still excellent” so that’s good:
Nonprofit Funding (501c3) 101
Plot/content considerations: a lot of nonprofit funding doesn’t cover overhead expenses (IT, staff training, repairs, rent, interest on loans charities take out because the government doesn’t pay on time) and to heighten the absurdity of the situation, I highlighted a fictional nonprofit with a rat problem. I kept it light hearted but there are some references to rat bites, rabies shots, and having the rats take “a one way field trip across the rainbow bridge”
