Word Count: 854 | Rating: General Audiences | Tags: The story of Noshiko, Kira and Hikari with their respective wolves; it's all about connection, the complicated spider-web of coincidences, defining and redefining our personal responsabilities through our expectations and that of others.
When Noshiko Yukimura finally defeated the Nogitsune, that dark spirit that managed to possess the body of her deceased lover instead of taking her as it should have, she didn't do it alone.
The woman that aided her in the quest for vengeance, of retribution, but above all else, of righting her wrongs and putting to rest the evil she had unleased onto the world, was none other than her former internment camp friend, Satomi Ito.
This woman, who she thought she would never see again, the one who turned out to be a werewolf, had decided to follow her and make the weight of the burden lighter.
Her responsibility to the world was now completed and she had amended her wrongs.
And like many other lessons that we forget through our hectic lives, she did it not by herself but by having another by her side.
Many things about Scott McCall attracted Kira Yukimura.
At the time, the young woman was still not sure what was the strange aura that appeared around her whenever she took a picture of herself.
The only thing that she knew was that the boy that smiled at her that day was that he was... cute. She didn't feel a particularly strong connection to him that first time they met, she simply thought he was interested in her, in some way that she didn't know exactly to be, and she was desperate enough to make new friends, however that may be.
She saw him again, after class, but he and Stiles rushed into an unoccupied classroom and stayed there for a while, so she didn't have the chance to talk to the boy at that time either.
She finally had her chance when Scott and his friends were talking about something that made her recall Bardo, the Tibetan word for the in-between state of life and death. She was so excited to share her knowledge that she almost didn't catch the worry in their eyes when she mentioned the last progressive state.
Death.
When her mother still let Satomi visit them, back when she happened to be on any business trip near New York, she had explained to her multiple concepts of Buddhism to her.
The woman was so serenely powerful, she had a calm but strong presence, similar to her mom, but different.
Kira knew she lived in Beacon Hills once upon a time, but she had no way of communicating with her to ask her this favor. So, researching on her own it was.
She couldn't help the feeling that was slowly gripping her heart.
She wanted to impress that boy, she wanted him to look at her with those kind and attentive eyes again.
In the end, it was through knowing Scott that they managed to defeat the Void kitsune that had tormented her mother all those years before.
Her responsibility was to the world, but most importantly, her responsibility was to make sure her friends, the friends that really knew her, survived and got to live.
Hikari Zhang was certainly impressed.
With Liam being such a bad liar yet still finding ways to protect his identity as a werewolf, that is.
Mabe it was the fact that the young man wasn't exactly wanting in lying to her, or maybe it was that he wasn't accustomed to keeping the truth from other supernaturals.
Either way, he got off the phone and looked at her with the guiltiest eyes she had ever seen on someone.
"I can't go with you to the park tomorrow, I have to catch a friend at the airport, she's bringing me something important," he explained.
And Hikari understood.
Liam talked frequently about his friends, even though he rarely saw any of them, at least to the best of her knowledge.
So, she went home that day while Liam went to the airport, and didn't see him for a whole week.
And as it turned out, Liam's pack had decided that, because he was the one furthest from Beacon Hills, he was going to be entrusted with custody of what remained of a former enemy of theirs: a Nogitsune.
She decided to ask about it; what he planned to do now that he had it.
He didn't know, but she had an idea.
It seemed to amuse him.
"To be honest, sometimes I see you, and I think of her, I think of Kira, and what would have happened if she was still with us," confessed Liam.
"Did you love her?"
"Not like I love you... I used to have a crush on her, she was cute after all. But you are... well, you, and that's really all there is," a sheepish smile played on Liam's face, clearly embarrassed.
She could understand the initial pull, merely curiosity, simple attraction, but that isn't all there is. Not for him.
And definitely not for her.
And Hikari knows that this is not her responsibility, not really.
But Liam got this responsibility passed on to him, and she'd be damned if she wasn't going to share that burden with man she had come to love.
