Meet Avatar Nyi! (ATLA OC)
Nyi, meaning ‘two’ in Lhasa Tibetan, is the Avatar after Wan. Below are some fun facts and a list of some of her achievements so you don’t have to read my chicken scratch lol.
Born Deaf in a world where no one knew Wan would reincarnate, the other Airbenders thought Nyi was making it up when she claimed to ‘hear’ voices speaking to her in her head. She wasn’t sure how, having never heard spoken language before, but she could understand them and what they were telling her: They were Wan and Raava and she was the Avatar.
Guided by her past life, Nyi left her people to travel on her own to learn the elements and see the world. Airbenders, true to their nature, had for the most part stayed out of the conflicts/wars over land by remaining nomadic and peaceful. So when faced with her first real battle, Nyi was shocked to see people hurting and even killing each other.
With each infant nation having a unique written dialect, she found it impossible to communicate. Until, that is, she met Liu. An Earthbender, Liu was no stranger to these territory wars. Determined to communicate with Nyi, Liu worked with her to create a hand signed language. It was through this language that Nyi was finally able to tell Liu about being the Avatar.
The pair spent many years traveling to different forming nations to help end conflict for good. While that was an impossible goal, they did manage to help set up borders, local governments (as opposed to the single leveled governments most had on the lion turtles), and trade.
In their later years, Nyi and Liu married and had three children: Rinchen, Amala, and Li-Ben. They spent the rest of their lives continuing to mediate conflicts within and amongst the new nations. They also managed to standardize a written dialect and all in all focused on bettering communication. At her core, Nyi believed that communication was key to peace; That if the nations would just talk to each other, they’d realize they wanted the same things and get along.
Nyi eventually passed away of old age, paving the way for the next Avatar. She lived on through her children, pet winged lemur ‘Scrappy’, and of course through her impact on the world. Her most difficult to learn element was fire due to her soft spoken and slow to take action nature.
If you read this far, thank you! I don’t often make OCs but I had the idea for a Deaf Avatar and ran with it. I’d love to know your thoughts (on her story or the art -- I know it isn’t Van Gogh or anything but I’m proud of it).
