Yates competed at theĀ 1980 Summer Olympics, finishing sixth in theĀ 4,000m individual pursuit.Ā As an amateur in 1980, he won the British 25-mileĀ individual time trial championship, and took the national record for 10-mile time trials with 19m 44s. As an amateur Yates rode forĀ Athletic Club Boulogne-BillancourtĀ in Paris, Europe's most successfulĀ sports clubĀ with fellow British ridersĀ John HeretyĀ andĀ Jeff Williams.Ā Yates first race for theĀ ACBBĀ was the Grand Prix de Saint-Tropez which he won by riding off the front of theĀ peloton.Ā Yates won fifteen races in total for theĀ ACBBĀ and also finished third in the prestigiousĀ individual time trialĀ Grand Prix des NationsĀ which was won byĀ Martial Gayant. Yates had develeoped a reputation as a strong time trialist and for an incredible turn of speed and power. He turned professional in 1982 forĀ PeugeotĀ riding alongsideĀ Graham Jones,Ā Phil Anderson, Robert MillarĀ andĀ Stephen Roche. He stayed withĀ PeugeotĀ for six seasons and became British professionalĀ individual pursuit champion in 1982 and 1983. In 1988 riding forĀ Fagor, he won the sixth stage of theĀ Tour de France, a 52Ā km time-trial, beatingĀ Roberto VisentiniĀ by 14 seconds andĀ Tony RomingerĀ by 23 seconds. That year he also won a stage at theĀ Vuelta a EspaƱa, ParisāNice, Midi-Libre and finished fourth overall in theĀ Tour of Britain. In 1989 he joined the American team,Ā 7-Eleven and took two stages and overall victory in the Tour of Belgium, won theĀ Grand Prix Eddy MerckxĀ and finished second inĀ GentāWevelgem. In 1991 Yates then moved to Motorola. During stage six of theĀ 1994 Tour de FranceĀ Yates got into a breakaway and took the overall lead by one second over Gianluca Bortolami. He became only the third BritonĀ to wear theĀ maillot jaune. Yates retired in 1996 having competed in 12 Tours, completing nine; 45th was his best placing overall.
