In 1976, the German aerodynamicist Luigi Colani created a super-aerodynamic prototype, based on the modest first-generation Volkswagen Polo, with a turbocharger for the 1.1-litre engine, with the ambition to break a land-speed record for its class. The engine produced 142hp but no official top speed was ever recorded.
