The 1979 film, The Social Life of Small Urban Spaces, begins at the plaza of the iconic Seagram Building located in Manhattan. Here William H. Whyte, a pioneer in the study of human behavior in urban settings, sought to determine why this plaza was successful as a public space. Whyte and his team of researchers observed and analyzed the interactions and behaviors of people at this and other plazas.
