This train of thought started with @ilyapasta's post yesterday about when Shane and Ilya think their relationship started, and my response that I think it they enjoy feeling like it was destiny, but it veered pretty far from that. I ended up remembering this amazing Defector article about an Olympic speed skater and his schedule. One thing I find so interesting about competing at this level is -- yes, you have to have talent, but you also have to work very hard. But... being able to work that hard is ALSO a talent. Being able to focus that deeply, to spend that much time alone with yourself and your body as you put in the work day in and day out -- not everyone can do that. (And some people can do it but don't have the raw talent to take it to the top.)
(I got to the Defector article by thinking about how destiny maybe feels more like a real force that guides your life if you really are exceptionally skilled at your chosen field -- or maybe it feels LESS real because you think primarily of all the work you do?)
Anyway! Article is fascinating and very Shane-coded, I think. Worth a read!
Shane Hollander would really get why Alexander wept when there were no more worlds to conquer tbh
Ilya to Shane after that New Yorker subscription hits:
Had to switch from my audiobook to music while I mowed the lawn because my brain just wanted to think Heated Rivalry thoughts (apologies to George Saunders, I will come back) and then shuffle turned up "Me and Paul," (probably my favorite Willie song) and it sent me down a path of thinking about Cliff and Ilya on the Raiders together: I guess Buffalo ain't geared for me and Paul

Thinking about the joyous crashout Ilya has the day he finds out about Amik, the mascot for the 1976 Montreal Olympics
small snippet from my fwb thiam fic "Scotty Doesn't Know" (coming June 21st)!
Liam sighs, wrapping his arm around Theo’s waist and settling more comfortably against him. “It doesn’t matter. This can’t happen again.”
There’s something strained in his voice. Something about the way his hand clutches Theo’s side like letting go means moving on. “Agreed,” Theo says. Liam sighs again.
It’s a foolish agreement. If Liam didn’t want this, crave this in the same way Theo does, he wouldn’t have stayed. He would be scrambling out of bed, tugging on his clothes and get away from Theo as fast as he super-humanly can.
But he’s still here. In Theo’s bed. On top of him.
“Wouldn’t want anyone to assume you’re gay, right?” Theo asks, tone a bit more biting than he’d liked. His hand trails down Liam’s back before moving up again. Liam shivers.
“I promise you, that’s the least of my worries.”
