AU : Star-Crossed-Waters
Summary : Eklips finds himself in a net and thinks that letting you free him is a better solution.
Notes : Recently joined a dca writing club entitled @little-stars-writing-club and the prompt was : "Y/N finds mer DCA stuck in a net on the beach" but obviously I tweaked it a little to suit this AU of mine so enjoy! :)
It seems the King-to-be himself was stuck within a net.
Truthfully, you got curious one night about the experience of fishing with nets and had borrowed one from a fisherman of the small town you lived in. Although your house was technically on the beach, it wasn’t quite that far from society and it was only natural for you to go procure one… at some point in life. Not that it was illegal or anything but the look that had settled on said fisherman had your mind looping in circles anxiously.
In any case, you had successfully obtained one fishing net.
Setting it up was easier than you thought too and you had fun tossing it around a couple of times… until you accidentally caught Eklips in it. The victim himself claimed to have been lost in thought and had suddenly been ensnared by a vile contraption to which he could easily escape from by shifting forms but he thought it’d be more rewarding if you were the one to free him instead.
What did he mean by rewarding?
You had yet to decipher it… Nor did you want to.
Scratching your head at the predicament you were in, you thought of using the conch shell the boys had given you a few weeks back to summon Solis and Lunae. Eklips shook his head vehemently. “They’re both in a very important gathering right now. I advise you not to disturb them.”, he said in a lower octave, almost authoritative in nature. Whether he was serious or not, you supposed following his orders was of great importance right now.
“Fine… but I can’t swim that well, you know.”, that was a white lie obviously but he didn’t need to know that - Eklips grinned with his sharp fangs glinting in the late afternoon sun. “My, my, then I’ll have to keep you afloat then…”, he sang teasingly. You had no problems with that. Besides, he couldn’t move around too much anyways, lest he tangle himself even further.
You moved closer to the edge of the pier, the water sloshing leisurely against the wood. Welp, here goes nothing! Breathing in and out, you dipped into the water with ease and right on cue, Eklips grabbed you. His strong arms boasted of a strength you knew could snap your spine in an instant but you let that comment be washed up by the subtle waves instead of saying that outloud.
No need to boost his ego.
His chest is warm amidst the chilly waters and you struggle to keep your posture stable enough. “Y-You. Can you let go of me for a second?”, okay scratch that the water was freezing. He relented and let you go, mourning the loss of body contact. Your legs kick and thrash under the water and your arms move in tandem trying to keep you afloat.
Yeah… you definitely needed to practice swimming more.
“Ahem… okay… how do we do this?” It was kind of surreal that your legs couldn’t quite reach the bottom. Ack. A terrifying thought and well, the water was clear but that didn’t really prove to be a comforting thought. Eklips took notice and immediately soothed you.
“If it proves to be too much effort, I can do it myself, my delicate seafoam.”, his words were sweetened but your pride tasted the saltiness of the ocean. “No, no. I can do it.”, you reassured him. Eklips chuckled then said, “Go on then.” You wracked your brain for solutions, anything that could get him out in the most gentle way possible.
Being in there for half an hour couldn’t have been comforting for him after all.
You gulped in a large breath of air and dived under.
Opening your eyes and letting them adjust to what was envisioned in front of you - albeit blurry - you saw that his tail was trapped in one of the holes of said fishing net. You tapped at his tail to let him know you were going to handle it and his tail flicked in response to signify that you were given the okay. Giving a tug to the rope, you pull in small bursts to cause minimal damage to the scales. The tail twitched but other than that, there were no sounds of muffled pain from above.
Still, his tail was way too big for the hole. It needed more effort but your oxygen was running low. Terrible. Your P.E. teacher would’ve laughed at your stamina.
You swam up and gasped for air. “Now, that’s a sight.”, Eklips commented idly, eyes half lidded and a lazy smirk settling itself on his smooth lips. God, can’t he give you a break. “Not funny.”, you huffed, continuing to breathe in and out calmly. “How is it that you’re immune to my compliments, precious pearl?”, he studied your features with admiration and quiet affection. “Wouldn’t you like to know, fish boy?”, you quipped with a smirk of your own.
“Just a bit more and you’ll be free. Just give me… 2 more minutes.” Eklips nodded and replied, “Alright then.” You blinked your eyes to be rid of the salty ocean tears and dived back down after another gasp of air.
Blegh. A nice warm shower after this would be so good.
Tugging on the rope once more, you shimmied the tail out of its grasp and swam back up frantically. Pwah! Then, you guided his arms towards you and shimmied them out of their respective holes too. Nice. “There ya go!”, you triumphantly announced, throwing the net onto the pier.
Man, was that heavy after being soaked in water for so long.
“My saviour…”, he said dryly, getting a swift and light smack on his chest in retaliation. “Hey, it was hard work getting all that off you.”, a scolding tone overtook your voice as you narrowed your eyes on him. “Of course, my love. My apologies.”, he kissed your wrist reverently. “Would you like extra oxygen?”, he continued his teasing from earlier in full force.
“Actually…”, you wrapped your arms around his neck, careful of his gills. “Yes please.”, you asked politely. Eklips’s purple fins flared in surprise but soon they calmed down and he was eagerly kissing you in the next second.
Sighs. Sometimes, you wondered where the almost elegant and cool mermaid was a few weeks ago but hey, you weren't complaining… so you kissed back just as enthusiastically, letting him carry you onto his chest and the both of you leisurely floated about near the lighthouse area.

I see, I see! Hmm... it's a bit unconventional but I find that a good way to train a fantasy writing muscle is to do roleplay about it? Like for instance, I played a lot of D&D and doing that plus seeing the way that others in my group engaged with the fantasy setting live helped me form a better idea on what to do as well on an impulse. It's almost like a writing sprint in how it can get the mind to engage with the subject. And it won't be perfect on first draw, but it starts to develop a skill set about it- y'know?
There's also engaging with a bunch of different fantasy medias for inspiration. Or writing a blurb of fantasy for yourself that is so absurd that it is too far from any reasonability, but it helps you know what are the breaking points. If you can create an example for yourself that feels like the 'thats too much' point, it can be easier to write between the fantasy lines. If that helps. haha
You won't always feel up to writing fantasy, but that's okay! Sometimes particular themes can have seasons. It doesn't mean that you'll be in a slump about it forever. The season for it will come, and you'll be ready for it.
I, for one, am excited to see wherever it goes- whenever it goes. 💖

Okok so um lemme do a test drabble :

It was another peaceful night, the water sloshing gently against the mini island. The lighthouse was dark and at the pier, sat a human who was playing with her feet in the water. You favoured the quiet and the way the cool water caressed you, tenderly taking away your worries. Then, it became ticklish and your lips bubbled with giggles. Ah - you quickly retract your feet and look at the water with an indignant look, cheeks darkening in hue over knowing who would attempt such a thing.
A ripple in the water and something lurking - splash! Your eyes widen as a large body emerges, skin sleek with water as it cascades lazily down. It was Moon. It's always Moon whenever silly antics like these are being done. His cape is shimmering with the soft glitter that it holds while his hat-like appendage on his head curls softly behind him, adjusting to being weighed down again while his cape drapes over his shoulders. You can see the faint glint of his scales and the way they shone beautiful gradients of blue. His white eyes are playful as he lowers down to lean with his arms crossed on the pier.
“Hello, precious pearl.”, he whispers as a greeting. He must've known you needed some quiet at the moment. “Greetings, Loch Ness Monster.”, you teased. He narrows his eyes and pinches your foot very, very lightly. “H-Hey!”, you squawked. His sharp teeth showed as he cackled. “Naughty human.”, he joked as well. “Pfft - why’re you up here?, you asked Moon with a raised eyebrow. “Escaped boring gathering.”, Moon supplies. You nodded in agreement. “Oh, fair.”,
“...Wanted to see you.”, Moon continued, hiding partially behind his arms. “...oh?”, a teasing tone coated your voice. Bringing yourself to stand up and lean on his hand, you drawled a, “Did someone miss me?”, lips curling into a smug grin. He hides further but his hat’s tail begins wagging. Your eyebrows raise in shock. Oh. That made you shy to think about. Patting his hand with both hands, he lifts his head to look at you properly again. “I missed you too. Upsie?” Moon stares blankly before slowly turning his palm to face upwards and you climb onto it.
As soon as you sit properly, cross-legged and all that, he brings you higher and brings you closer to his face. He rises from the pier, straightening his back and his hat's tail settles back down. The water below is a bit frightening to see at this angle but you try to focus on Moon’s face. You study the way the pale moonlight falls upon his features, casting a light glow upon the smooth expanse of his face, his large white eyes staring back into yours and the cute little three dots below each eye. The light is akin to a halo, making you feel like you were observing an unreal and ethereal being before you… and you supposed that was true.
You hadn't even known that mermaids existed until recently. What a strange and beautiful thing he was. Moon himself was having the same thoughts. “You're captivating…”, he utters your name like seaglass, a happy trill echoing from his throat. You blushed from head to toe, feeling all too conscious all of a sudden. “Wha - No! You are!”, you retaliated back before clamping your mouth with both hands. He trills again happily.
You close your face when he comes closer, delighting in the way you were trying to shy away.
Augh.

Ohhhh, I love the inspiration being Barbie in a Mermaid Tale. The whole AU is reaaally cool! Aquatic themes are one of my passions- although my specialty is a bit more with pirates & sirens. haha
As far as writing in aquatic themes, there's a good amount of suspended disbelief you can utilize depending on which perspective it focuses on. Y/N might not know much about sea life so everything they would see beneath the waters is just something new and colorful to them. The sea could be Y/N's stars- a beautiful and mysterious thing. I imagine you don't need to focus too much on the accuracies anyways because I think Y/N would have other more important things keeping them busy. shshsh
But there is a website called inaturalist.org and they have a section under the "More" tab labeled "Guides". Through that, you can look up local wildlife by place. Oceania has the most for sea/ocean life recorded. It's not a complete resource as I believe it relies on approved travelers submitting their findings personally but it does help for finding some of the visuals/species expected in focused ecological zones.

Like I love those genres very much but writing them doesn't come to me naturally like, for example, fantasy in terms of land??? Maybe?? Like what I'm trying to achieve with The White Mage AU.
Though you are right that she'll be MORE than busy with keeping appearances on land and underwater haha - being the supposed bride of the princes would already be quite taxing and then, eventually the uncle's gonna find out and wrangle her for not telling 🤣 and there's also the wooing she'll have to endure before accepting to be their bride first and all that 😭
