Sharing to save a life:
Do you hate that you can't see your scroll bars anymore - that they keep dancing in and out depending on the position of your mouse??
You can totally fix that!
In Windows 11, go to Settings > Accessibility > Visual effects and toggle the first setting, Always show scrollbars, to On.
Now your scroll bars are always there, ready for you to use!
This was not the issue I was trying to fix when I found it, but it sure helps!
[Edit because someone thought this was Windows 11 specific in the notes - it's not. The vanishing scroll bars have been common to both Windows and Mac for a long time. This just tells you how to turn them back on!]

I know I am now An Old, but I am so fed up of the current vogue for scroll bars with no ends or buttons. You can’t even tell how far down the damn thing you are because it stops about an inch and a half up, not at the bottom, but there’s no indication of that, and then it disappears into a thin sliver of nothingness when you’re not hovering over it. I don’t care if it’s ugly, give me a scrollbar that actually works you morons. And preferably one that is more than one shade off the background colour so that I can see it without tilting my screen fifty different directions to find the one with the highest contrast. Graphic design should be both aesthetically pleasing and functional. Stop sacrificing function for style.
If you need to style your scrollbars right now, one option is to use a collection of ::webkit prefixed CSS properties. See the Pen CSS-Tricks Almanac:
Mobile Dev + Roadmap Review
Hey everyone, hopefully you had a good July! I've got a fair few things to share so in no particular order:
Gallery Conveniences
Sometimes artists want to show multiple versions of an image such as different variations or different components of it (e.g. lineart vs. flats). I thought it might be cool to make that a built-in feature of galleries:
This would save the artist the trouble of having to make an image like this themselves, plus it can be interacted with.
Mobile Development
Recently I bought my first (yes, first!) smart phone which means I can now develop for mobile much more easily.
I managed to set it up so that phone can access the local server running on my desktop computer. Additionally, I can debug the phone on my desktop, as pictured above (larger version here).
It's been pretty straightforward to make the site work on mobile so far. It mostly involves small visual changes rather than editing any logical code. Swiping between columns doesn't feel as good as it could but I'll improve it eventually.
Scrollbars Work Now Properly
By default browser scrollbars are quite bright and don’t fit with StoryDevs’ darker theme. And since not all browsers let you style the scrollbars I made my own:
My custom scrollbars use the default scrollbar under the hood but visually push it off to the side so that you can’t see it. Then I create my own scroll track and dragger with a couple of HTML elements.
In terms of the actual functionality, the default shortcut keys all work because the default scrollbar is still there, just hidden. So the page up/down, up/down arrows, spacebar, and home/end keys all do what they’re supposed to.
The only functionality I had to implement was:
Detect when scrolling occurs and modify the position of the dragger accordingly.
Allow users to drag the dragger up and down, panning the page.
Allow users to click the scroll track to jump somewhere on the page.
Roadmap Review
A few months ago I shared a roadmap that looked something like this:
Complete editors for each section of the site.
Restore the account system.
Design & implement a better home page.
Create a mobile version that's in sync with the desktop version.
Fix some bugs.
Update the live version of the site.
Invite a handful of people to use it.
Reviewing that today, four out of those seven tasks have begun to be significantly addressed:
An editor for the library exists. I'll probably attempt the forums next.
The account system, while barebones, has been restored.
A mobile version is now roughly up to speed with the desktop version.
Many bugs have been fixed (the scrollbar not working was one such bug).
I'm pretty happy with that so far.
Support The Site
A couple of patrons recently had their payments declined which means that the costs of hosting the site and keeping the domain names are no longer covered. You can help by becoming a patron or sharing the site/this post with others :)
