Actually the art style was a big turn off for me intially too, but... welp, now that I’m into it I can’t imagine it in any other way. It goes kinda perpendicularly to mainstream beauty standards and it’s kind of great once you get used to it? also, there’s color fuckery at the beginning, it’s 100% on purpose and plot crucial. just push through it, your eyes will get a rest later

quick recap of the premise: a shy not very good student discovers she’s actually 1) a genius whose intelligence was inhibited by a device all this time; 2) an heir to a noble lineage known for their genius; 3) in trouble because of both of these things separately and together (that’s why the device was made). and then she kicks the world’s ass and acquires a personal These People Are Mine bond to those loyal to her, who are plentiful both because of her lineage and because of her personality. enemies are also plentiful and the europe is in trouble and woohoo! it’s great

Things Girl Genius has:

- a world of MAD SCIENCE!!! mwahahahah!

- lots of humor??? self-awareness about the nonsense that doesnt undercut the nonsense itself in the slightest

- characters who ALL CARE VERY MUCH, even if it’s about different things sometimes

- crappy families, good families, families of choice, complicated families, ALL KINDS OF FAMILIES

- no but have I mentioned mad science because that’s like 90% of what’s going on at any given point

- politics!!!! it’s really fun!!! in a terrible way. but fun

- s u f f e r i n g (in a good way)

- cute as shit romance??? lots of it!!!

- some gay, particularly as of lately. but yeah Tarvek is 100% very specifically in love with Gil even if he won’t admit it under torture (unless the torture is Gil getting hurt ahaha that would work)

- S T R O N G  F E M A L E  C H A R A C T E R S

- yes, plural

- like, there’s the protagonist, of course!!! she is the best and smartest and EVERYONE RECOGNIZES IT AND RESPECTS HER. with rare exceptions who discover their mistake near-instantly usually and it is HIGHLY SATISFYING TO WATCH

- and then there are Zeetha, Sleipnir, Lilith, Sanaa, Colette, Seffie, that-cute-as-shit-assistant-whose-name-i-forgot, the pirate lesbians, 

- not all of them are specifically good in a fight, that’s not what i mean by strong. by strong i mean FUCKING AWESOME which all of them are

- fights! badass action all the time!!!

- engineering!!! mechanics!!! the main characters’ battle superiority comes out of their ability to build and fix shit as much as out of straight up fight skills

- “it’s hard to dismantle things with a knife” - Agatha, on fighting someone with a wrench instead of a knife. she wins because she dismantles a thing

- HEROICS. like, okay, this story is NOT dark. and sure it might be making fun of Othar Trygwassen but when Agatha hears screams behind her from a group of people who cast her out to die she fucking turns around and runs back to save them???

- this happens ALL THE TIME. even fucking Tarvek. like I wouldnt expect this of a self-professed ‘weasel’ and ‘snake’ but he still wont leave people to die even when they dont even expect him to help and just????????????? i love them all?????

- and this isnt a world where people just take it for granted? it’s basically never commented on but you can SEE people’s attitudes shift because of it and just. AWESOME

- fucking magnificent villains. YOU WANT TO SEE THEM BURN

- it’s not black and white morality tho... sure you might want to see Tweedle burn, burn, burn, but the next arc features him and Agatha working together becuase fuck there’s a bigger threat and anyway politics

- the POINT is not to kick someone’s ass, it’s to protect people!!!

- it’s really good at writing smart characters? who are smart in different ways? like often writers struggle with this because its hard to write someone who’s smarter than you are, but Foglios know exactly what they are doing
