If you had to pick a favorite song from each FOB album in order, could you do it? 🙃
OOOH THIS IS SUCH A GOOD QUESTION. My favorites from each album change like once a month but I'll try my best. warning you now that this will be A LOT
evening out with your girlfriend- okay technically depending on who you ask this album doesn't even count as their first (Patrick doesn't like it because he doesn't play guitar on it and their drummy, Andy hurley my beloved, didn't join the band until tttyg) but I'm gonna count it and I'd have to say it's "parker Lewis can't lose (but I'm gonna give it my best shot)" while this album definitely isn't my favorite I definitely enjoy the word play specifically in this one. this album was almost exclusively written by Patrick and while some of its a bit clunky i love the word play in the "converse with my converse" verse.
Take this to your grave- "sending postcards from a plane crash (wish you were here)" I swear I don't like all the songs with parentheses... I really like the line "my insides are copper, I'd kill to make them gold" it's also a really fun track to sing. much like most of this album, the song reads very bitter and angsty but it balances that with heavy drums and guitar very well imo.
My heart will always be the b-side to my tongue- okay this is an ep but it gets a pass because it came out the exact day I was born. While I do love all of this EP, because I'm a sucker for acoustic shit" I would have to go with "it's not a side effect of the cocaine I am thinking it must be love" long title but it's a David Bowie line ... This song is incredibly queer coded in my opinion. Patrick sounds so incredibly good here as well
From under the cork tree- "snitches and talkers get stitches and walkers"- While this is technically on the "limited tour" version of the album on Spotify i am going to count it for the album in general. this song takes us back to the more aggressive punk that fob sort of started out as, There's aggression in Patrick's voice and I absolutely adore Pete's lyricism here. there's a hint of self hatred and fan criticism inn these lyrics that is expanded upon more in their next album
Infinity on High- "I've got all this ringing in my ears but none on my fingers" this song is a part of my soul i swear. from the beginning line of "you're a canary and I'm a coal mine" to Patrick singing along to the guitar towards the end, this song is beautiful in ways I cannot describe. I got to hear this song live earlier this year and I swear it was a religious experience
Folie a Deux- This one is really hard because this is my all time favorite fob album buuuut as of right now I'll go with "coffees for closers"; I want to eat the drums in this song ... which is a totally normal thing to say i swear. The line "kick drum beating in my chest again" is SUCH an important line to me, infact anyone whose gone to a concert with me in the recent years has heard me reference, also the line "I love the mayhem more than the love" speaks to me deeply. This is the quintessential fob album for me, its a great amalgamation of everything they made up until this point and a precursor for everything they put out after
I'm putting this at this here because it actually comes from a 2009 compilation album but my favorite fob song is "from now on we are enemies". while this album would come out while the boys were more or less on an indefinite Hiatus, I believe thing song bridges the gap between post and prehiatus. it features the same dense lyrics and heavy instruments while also having fun synth and a catchy chorus. "I just want to be better than, your heads medicine" is a line that hits like a tidal wave. this song is also very drum and cymbal heavy which i <3
Save rock and roll- "Young Volcanoes" as mentioned I am a sucker for acousticy songs and this is about as close as we get to stripped down songs on this album. I love the clapping and simple guitar, it really allows you to focus on Patrick's voice and GOD does he sound amazing. Speaking of Patrick his laugh after "assholes" is TO DIE FOR, its one of my favorite things. there's also a whole movie thing and storyline that plays out through the music videos and the video for this one is among my favorites
American Beauty/American Psycho- "Jet Pack Blues" this whole album is, in my opinion, beautiful and horribly overlooked; of course a ton of people know centuries and Uma Thurman but the back half the the album especially is unfairly written off often. jpb tells a pretty sad story about bitter past love (what fob does best) and the build up to the chorus is just amazing. i also got to hear this song last year and was my highlight of the evening, despite the fast that they played an unreleased track after this. ab/ap is my second favorite album so I love all of the songs very dearly.
MANIA- "sunshine riptide" this is often considered fall out boys most divisive album and while its not my favorite' I do love it. i think this song represents the album very well; an unexpected collab, synth music, vocal missing, a "more pop sound". while the lyrics could definitely be considered more simplified from their later work, I still think they have the feel of fob, the only difference to be is at surface level they have a much happier feel because well ... mania.
Lake effect kid- "super fade" lek is a short three song EP that primarily pays tribute to fall out boys hometown, Chicago, and as a Midwest person, who is literally a lake effect kid I LOVE IT. super fade is a very synth heavy song but its very fun. I could talk about the parallels that "my love isn't lost its all I've got" has to other lines of their songs and the spiral it send me into but this is long enough.
So much (for) stardust- "kintsugi kid(ten years) " fun fact: this song made me cry the first time I heard it. "I'm pretty sure as far as humans go, I am a hard hard pill to swallow, and I know I'm not your intended dose" is a HEARTBREAKING way to start a song and I will never forgive fob but also am endlessly thankful that they make music that is relatable to the point of pain. This song is incredibly personal to me and ugh I just love her so much. Patrick sounds amazing as always and the rest of the band is really putting htie all into it. Also I know you said one but "heaven, Iowa" is also incredibly special to me and feels like a sister song to Kintsugi kid. This song features Pete's daughter, Marvel< Howling at the end which I think is heartwarmingly adorable and I could ramble on 4ever about the meaning of this song but I'll stop.
anyways, hope u enjoyed me rambling (:
