Een van mijn meest dierbare vrienden heeft een blog post geschreven over haar ervaringen met het schoolsysteem, het stoppen met haar studie en de staat van haar mentale gezondheid na dit alles. Ik ben zo trots op haar dat ze dit wil delen met de wereld, want de afgelopen jaren, vooral dit jaar, zijn niet makkelijk voor haar geweest. Lees dit alsjeblieft en denk na over op welke gebieden het schoolsysteem en de maatschappij ons als jongeren faalt en hoe we dit zouden kunnen verbeteren. De druk die op ons wordt gelegd is immens hoog. Het lijkt wel alsof we op onze veertiende, wanneer we ons profiel kiezen, al moeten weten wat we later willen worden. Alsof we ons hele leven al uitgestippeld moeten hebben. Daarnaast moeten we ook al werkervaring hebben op jonge leeftijd en moeten we dit zien te handelen samen met het drukke en zware schoolleven. Voor Wendy (de schrijfster van de blog) en ook voor mij weet ik wat voor gevolgen dit heeft gehad op onze mentale en fysieke gezondheid (ik zelf heb er een burn out, een paniekstoornis, depressie, zelfmoordgedachtes en drie jaar therapie aan overgehouden). Ik hoop dit te zien veranderen op een positieve manier voor de volgende generaties in de komende jaren.
So we've got this system that allows teachers to put homework online (also what you have to learn for a test and when said test/homework is due). And it is honestly the worst when a kid has missed class for a day, or a few days, because he/she was ill. Like, our teachers will asume your classmates passed on everything to you. And no sir, that is not the case. Because some kids are hella shy and will not ask for the things they missed, simply because they're afraid to do so. And some kids are plain nasty and will purposefully withhold that shit, and then you'll find out on your next test that you missed half of the notes. Some people simply don't remember to tell their ill classmates about everything they missed, because we have like 9 lessons a day and I don't blame them for forgetting one. So please, teacher, stop making it our responsibility to interact with the people in our class to get everything we missed. Don't dismiss me when I come up to you and ask what I have to study, or what homework we have. Maybe the girl next to me bullies me and the girl behind me I don't know, maybe my connections aren't that good and I don't have a lot of friends in this class. Maybe those people are sick of other people being their responsibility, and won't help me. Maybe I do have friends in the class but they didn't pay attention. How is any of that my fault or my responsibility to catch up on? Please teacher, do your job and help me pass without making me feel like shit because you called me out when I didn't know something I missed, saying: "didn't you ask your classmates?"
