I basically got called a hoe for wearing a v neck. It shows the tip of my bra at most. Like oh no your 14 and you have a bra?? Boys cant know. Yet boys get away with calling me a faggot, sexualizing me in a normal skirt, and other shit. I missed math class (which im already so bad and confused at) and my fav class art. Fucking kill me.

đ§˘đ Why Are Hats Not Allowed in School?
Itâs a rule many kids (and parents) wonder about â and hereâs the full story:
â Hats can be seen as a distraction in class
đ Dress codes aim for respect and uniformity
đĄď¸ In some cases, hats may hide faces or cause security concerns
đ Itâs also about preparing students for professional environments
While not every school bans them, many do for these reasons.
đ Always check your schoolâs policy â and if needed, ask for exceptions based on culture, religion, or health. âď¸
âIf you have the figure it looks nice, but honey, you have to have a figure to carry out certain dresses⌠but it depends on your figure.â These are the words of LIBRA Academyâs assistant principal, Ms. Cervantes. At LIBRA many describe the administrators as ârudeâ when they comment on what students are wearing. How justified LIBRAâs staff members are when they make their remarks has become a common topic of discussion as people question: is it body shaming or not?
Â
So, what is appropriate and what is inappropriate to wear to school? âLAUSD believes that appropriate student dress contributes to a productive learning environment,â (LAUSD Policy Bulletin: Student Dress Codes/Uniforms). At LIBRA students are free to express themselves by dressing however they would like as long as they wear an approved uniform shirt. Despite this there are many dress code restrictions. Open-toed shoes are not allowed, but the item of most concern is not allowing shorts and ripped jeans. Ripped jeans are fine as long as underwear is not visible. The policy is that shorts need to touch your middle finger when your fingers are by your side and not any shorter. âWhen they are too short there's several things that could happen,â Assistant Principal Cervantes elaborates, âFirst of all it is inappropriate. If you have to be tugging at them maybe you're uncomfortable with it⌠everything goes up so you are very uncomfortable. You are more aware of what you are wearing.â
When a student wears something that a particular staff member considers inappropriate the staff member typically approaches the student to make a remark about their clothing. âOne time I was wearing my denim skirt and she [Ms. Cervantes] called me over and said, âSweetie you are so pretty, but that skirt ruins it,ââ shares a LIBRA junior. If her clothes were truly inappropriate, administration would have asked her to change, which was not the case. So, are such comments truly necessary? Chemistry teacher Mr. Chang comments, âYou have to understand that theyâre [LIBRAâs staff members] coming from a traditional setting. You have to consider that this is a professional setting.â
âBeing a bigger-sized girl, it really gets frustrating when Iâm not allowed to wear certain things at school,â student Maria Hernandez expresses, âWhen itâs really hot I want to wear my shorts.â She is not the only student that feels this way. When it gets hot, people want to wear shorts without being told that they are wearing shorts âfor attentionâ or that their shorts are too inappropriate. âIâve been dress-coded about seven or eight times,â says student Ielynn Cota who has been reprimanded countless times for wearing shorts or jeans that are too ripped, âI find it kinda dumb to spend all that time addressing what Iâm wearing when I should be in the classroom.â
Considering that administrators have made these comments and dress-coded students countless numbers of times, the controversial topic of body-shaming arises. Body-shaming is âthe action or practice of humiliating someone by making mocking or critical comments about their body shape or sizeâ(oxforddictionaries.com). When asked about this Ms. Cervantes said, âYouâve gotta give credit to people who have a healthy self-esteem in their figure, but you also have to give credit to people who know what is appropriate for their body type.â In her opinion her comments are not body-shaming, and people will only perceive it that way if they were already feeling self-conscious. âThe perception is different. If you already feel uncomfortable, and you know it is uncomfortable, if somebody makes a remark [about what you are wearing] I brought up what you were already feeling.â The way a student dresses can lead to comments and opinions: âIt looks classier I think if you wear something nice,â says Ms. Cervantes.
Putting people down for their bodies has negative effects on their health. According to CNN, âA new study found that overweight women who believe negative messages about their bodies are at greater risk for heart disease and diabetes than those who maintain a more positive body image.â It is detrimental not only to mental health but physical health, too.
Dress codes differ based on gender, accommodating boys in many ways by ensuring that their girlsâ clothing choices do not disturb their learning environment. This is not inclusive of students who do not identify within the gender binary. According to Rowena Lindsay from the Christian Science Monitor, âDress codes are typically divided along a gender binary, making it difficult for trans and gender non-conforming students.â Aside from this people have also accused dress codes of perpetuating rape culture. Movements against sexism and discrimination have targeted other schoolsâ dress codes, similar to the dress code implemented by staff members at LIBRA Academy. Many campaigns have, âcriticized the school dress codes for making girls responsible for preventing harassment from boys â logic that, they argue, contributes to rape culture where victims are blamed for dressing provocatively,â (the Christian Science Monitor).
It is staff membersâ responsibility to enforce the uniform policy and dress code, which they extend past wearing an approved uniform shirt. âRegardless of what your shape is or your figure short shorts are not appropriate, and thatâs a school policy anywhere you go. It really is up to the administration to enforce it,â says Ms. Cervantes. âI think thereâs things appropriate for every occasion.â

When I was 7 I used an innocent two piece swimsuit at school camp and I was banned from entering the pool because it was 'inappropriate'. Honestly if you sexualized my smol 7-year old fat stomach and back you can go and fuck yourself.
One of my friends in school today went into the office to get a pass and she was wearing a t-shirt, jacket, and shorts. Apparently, one of the people in the office took one look at her and said that they were a little too short. Of course, they were finger tip length, and she wasnât showing anything.Â
Their solution was to rip the seams out of the rolled up part to make them longer. My friend was trying to be nice and not get into trouble. So after they ruined her shorts and gave her a pass one of our teachers after hearing this story while my friend was still crying, had a great solution. She gave my friend her graduation robe to put over her clothes and a sign to put on it. It said, âIs this dress code?âÂ
The thing is she wasnât crying because they ruined her shorts, it was because she did nothing wrong, and no one did anything to stop this including the principal who was in the office at the time.
