So there is this one theory I’ve had for a while, but I just now connected two particular dots on it and now I am feeling very confident about it.
Specifically, I believe that the Schnee Glyph semblance is somehow derived from Old World Magic.
I’ve always gotten the sense that there was something different going on with the Schnee semblance compared to others. For one thing, it’s completely hereditary, which isn’t something we’ve really seen anywhere else. Plus, their glyphs are much more multi-purpose then most other semblances, and combined with the glyph/sigil aesthetic, the Schnee semblance seems more like an actual magic system then the ‘superpower’ model that semblances generally adhere to.
Before Volume 7 came out, I had a theory that either Weiss’s mother or even her grandmother was the Winter Maiden, that the Schnee family had actually been passing the Maiden powers down from mothers to daughters for generations. And they’d been doing this for so long that their children had started to inherit bits of the magic, hence the glyph semblance.
Now obviously that theory didn’t pan out, but now I think there may be a far more solid angle connecting the Schnee’s to Magic. Remember that Old World Magic came from the Gods,
Specifically, it was a gift from the God of Darkness.
Who also created the Creatures of Grimm...
Which the Schnees can summon.
Personally, I’d say the Grimm summoning ability paints a pretty solid line between the Schnees and the God of Darkness.
Plus, we’ve already seen a bit of Light’s powers be inherited by a mortal in the form of Ruby and her Silver Eyes.
It really only makes sense that we’d see a bit of Darkness’s powers manifest in the similar way.
And who would be more fitting a wielder than the partner of one who wields the power of light?
