I Still Believe
While I truly believe Nick and Jess will ultimately get back together, I can’t help but compare their break-up to that of Schmidt and Cece’s. Even when Schmidt and Cece broke up we saw plenty of witty banter, looks of longing, and even moments of genuine friendship. Anyone who shipped them always had hope that one day, they’d find their way back to one another.
Then we have Nick and Jess. The moment they broke up, they didn’t even return to what they had before. They were just two people, co-existing in the loft, who hung out occasionally because they had mutual friends. Mean while everything PRIOR to their getting together screamed, “THESE TWO WERE MEANT TO BE TOGETHER!!” Schmidt and Cece...not so much. Now THEIR relationship was based on lust and curiosity, initially. And while I’m happy they worked out, their working out trumping Nick and Jess working out will always somehow feel false to me.
I’m sorry, but from the beginning, Nick and Jess symbolized so much more. The random, and yes they have been RANDOM, moments of hope for a Ness reunion are insulting to us as fans. And IF they are building a reconciliation between them, I really hope they have a heavy emphasis on the REBUILD part. When Zooey returns, I want episodes where Nick and Jess are really FRIENDS again. I want moments were they get into trouble together, moments where they confide in each other, moments where they get into fights. I want them to deny the realization that those feelings have returned, or rather, maybe they never really left to begin with. And yes, I want all of this before the end of season 5. Even if they don’t ultimately get together at the end of this season, I want a clear path. I want a plan. I want a purpose. And no, I do not think it’s too much to ask for. In fact, I think it’s the least the writers can do to redeem themselves.
A lot of us fans have stuck around, even if they did mess it up. Maybe we’re crazy. Or maybe it’s just a testament to how good things once were. Because we still believe having them back together after so royally messing it up is better than believing what they had together was never really anything at all.
