Zuko stiffened at the light touch near his temple, the instinctive tension melting into puzzled stillness when he realized what she’d done. His fingers came up automatically, brushing against soft petals nestled in his dark hair. A daisy.

He stared ahead for a moment as a sigh slipped through his nose, his shoulders slumped and the faintest hint of color crept across his cheeks. He should’ve taken it out, but instead Zuko just let his hand fall away, the smallest ghost of a smile threatening the edge of his mouth. There was something disarming about such a simple and harmless gesture that he didn’t mind it as much as he pretended to.

“Do you... like food outside?”

His throat tightened. No, no. That sounds dumb. Say it like a normal person.

He opened his mouth, but the words wouldn’t come out. Instead, a strangled cough escaped, and he quickly looked away, his cheeks burning. Great. Real smooth.

She probably thinks you’re a fool. He swallowed hard. You shod just give up and walk away. No. You want this. You’ve never wanted something this simple before.

He tried again. “What I mean is —I’d like to spend some time with you. Just —just the two of us.” Now say it. Say it. Say it.

Wind is an animus, currently the only nightwing animus, and while she trusted her mother, she ran away from the kingdom in case someone else took over and wanted to use her for her powers, or someone else somehow could try and force her too.
