Two-Spirit

Two-Spirit is a term created by Indigenous peoples of North America in 1990 to bring together the diverse gender identities and sexualities that exist within their cultures.

It is not a single gender. Each nation has its own traditions, names, and ways of understanding these experiences.

For many communities, Two-Spirit people held important social, cultural, and spiritual roles before European colonization.

The term should not be used by non-Indigenous people, as it is specifically connected to the cultures and experiences of the Indigenous peoples of North America.

Irawhiti (Māori)

Irawhiti is a Māori-language term used by some people to describe transgender or gender-diverse experiences.

The term is part of the contemporary revitalization of Māori language and culture, allowing Indigenous people to describe their identities through their own cultural frameworks.

takatāpui (Māori)

Takatāpui is a Māori term used by Indigenous LGBTQIA+ people in New Zealand.

Historically, the word referred to an intimate relationship between people of the same sex.

Today, many Māori people use the term to express both their Indigenous identity and their gender or sexual diversity.

More than a specific sexual orientation or gender identity, Takatāpui connects a person to their culture, ancestry, and community.

Māhū (Kanaka Maōli)

Māhū is a traditional Hawaiian cultural identity associated with people who embody both masculine and feminine qualities.

Historically, māhū people held important roles as educators, keepers of knowledge, healers, and transmitters of cultural traditions.

The arrival of colonization and Christian missions attempted to erase these identities, but many Native Hawaiians continue to preserve and revitalize the māhū identity today.

Māhū is not simply the Hawaiian equivalent of "transgender" or "nonbinary." It is a distinct cultural identity deeply connected to Hawaiian history, culture, and spirituality.

Tibira/ Tybyra

Tibira is a historical figure documented during the colonial period.

According to interpretations by Indigenous researchers and collectives, Tibira may be understood as a man who had relationships with other men, or as a person who lived with a feminine gender identity or expression, challenging the norms imposed by colonizers.

Their story is remembered as an example that gender and sexual diversity already existed among Indigenous peoples long before colonization. ( Made by me )

Accounts of the Tupinambá people mention the çacoaimbeguiras.

Or KIDS Act, and its equivalents and similar legislation scattered in other bills: The Kids Online Safety Act, and a bunch of Age Verification mandates such as the SCREEN ACT .  The KIDs act  deceptively named bill, while it claims to protect children on the internet, is just repackaging unpopular censorship bills. The SCREEN act placed inside this would enable constant surveillance of American citizens, and put the sensitive data of everyone - especially children - at risk. The UK's disastrous rollout of the Online Safety Act is a perfect example of how unpopular, dangerous, and ineffective these laws are.  The Age verification bills mandate or incentivize that personal data be collected all in one place, making it easy for hackers gather, endangering children' s information and safety.  Kosa not only has similar problems, but gives state attorney generals too much power to sue any website for any reason. The last thing we need is a nanny state telling adults what we can and cannot see online.   I call on you to oppose the KIDs act package and similar, and tell your colleages to do so as well

in just a couple of days (or, sometime next week) americans might lose their freedom online, and even if not immediately because of the legal process, will be required by law to upload their id or face scan in order to use social media. this is a very basic description of what's going on, but digital identification isn't the only downside to this. censorship is eminent and these bills can extend past social media and be applied to anything the government would deem inappropriate for children.

you might think these bills are for protecting the kids, but they simply aren't. children will find a way to get online anyway, and may even turn to dangerous alternatives. most parents are dumb enough to just hand their children their id to use for whatever anyway, so these bills may not even work as intended. responsibility should be in parents' hands, not the state.

well, my friend, a lot! don't stay quiet, and stop whining about it without making an effort!!

- look up and email / write to / call your representatives. maybe even ones from other states too to cover more ground. blow up their phones and don't stop. tell them how unconstitutional these bills are, and reinform them that they are being passed in a sneaky way.

- spread the word. many people are unaware of this, and the popular majority who are is in favor of these bills.
