Hi! I just saw your reblog about debt collection and I have a question. Iāve been getting texts asking me to click a link to find out more about debt I owe from X company. Is there a way to figure out if I actually have debt with that company short of trying to call them? Obviously Iām not clicking random links in spammy texts, but searching for the company online isnāt giving me enough info to tell if itās feasible this might be actual debt I owe. The company I supposedly owe has no web presence other than a few listings in random directories, so I canāt tell if itās legit or some weird scam. I also donāt see anything showing up on my credit report. The texts basically say:
Here is your info from (company name), a debt collector, regarding (different company name) acct. Visit: (a link) Call (an 800 number) Details: (another link)
Totally understand if this isnāt something you can answer, Iām just sooooo reluctant to call a random company on a scammy looking text messageās say so!
Thanks for sharing all your hard won expertise-youāre delightful and deserve nice things.
This is spam and you don't owe any debt to this company.
If you legitimately owe someone debt, they ain't gonna text you about it. They're going to mail you several very scary-sounding letters on official letterhead threatening the destruction of your credit score, the ignominy of your family name, etc. etc. They will normally NOT text you... unless your debt is in collections. But by that time they will have contacted you 9 different ways first and you'll be well aware of the debt.
So rest easy, block the number, and go about your life. Here's our guide to spotting scams like this, just in case:
