I can’t win this battle. These are the end days, defeated by a never-ending Halloween sale on overpriced eyewear.

The sunglasses have won.

A question that my wife @diannamuircastle and I are asked often:

“Do you know [so and so]?”

Us: “No...?”

Them: “But she’s blind like you!  You must know each other, right?”

Now it is true that my wife does know a number of other blind people around the world.  But there is a simple fact that people who ask these questions do not know.

First, yes, you are correct: when you are Blind, your name is added automatically to the Blind Person’s Directory.  You don’t have to sign up for it, it happens just like your name shows up in Professor Minerva McGonnagall’s book if you are able to do magic and are thus eligible to attend Hogwarts at age 11.  This is truly one of the most amazing, wonderful things about Blindness: in theory, it is possible for every Blind Person to know every other Blind Person!  

So, no, you aren’t asking a stupid question.  You are not making the assumption that just because someone has a particular physical characteristic, they are automatically aware of and even best buddies with everyone else who has that same physical characteristic.  You are assuming that things work the way they should work.

There’s just one problem.

They haven’t released that damn Magic Book in Braille!

So they have a hard time finding each other.
