they lay curled, tangled, blankets piled over top. it’s cold here in xhorhas, but no colder than kamordah, and not cold enough to impact jester. still, it’s easier to say she needs the extra warmth than to admit that really she just wants the weight of jester there beside her. the presence of her.... 

it’s become habit now, but she wonders if jester would still agree to it if she knew the truth.

even with her friend’s back to her she can tell she’s awake, hear the uneven shifts of breath and the absence of soft snores. it seems they all struggle to sleep these days.

it’s been a long time since either of her parents looked at her or touched her with kindness, but still a memory lingers; her sick in bed and her mother’s fingers through her hair. she’d fallen asleep so quickly. had been almost mad at herself for missing so much of that gentleness. 

beau hesitates for just a moment, but then reaches out, her hand finding soft blue locks, brushing through so carefully. it doesn’t come natural to her to be tender, warm, but she hopes she can do this at least, can maybe just help jester sleep. 

she wants to be softer.

"Me? Afraid? Why, I’ve come back from the dead twice now! What do I have to be afraid of? I’ve bested The Raven Queen herself!” His words are just as much a performance as they were when they first met--a carnival barker trying to drum up business. Performing is easy, it’s familiar--and in this moment, it’s necessary.

The first resurrection came with a lot of complications. Carving out an identity from a blank slate, learning how to be a person without all the benefits of childhood and adolescence. This time around, Molly had a much easier time of it--but it came with its own complications.

Just as he remembers his life as Mollymauk, so too does he remember his death. In vivid detail. 

If it were just the pain, that’d be one thing. He can deal with pain. It’s all the other little details about feeling the life drain out of him that really make his skin crawl. At least his mind is kind enough to blur the details around digging his way out of the grave. While he’s awake, anyway.

Besides, he’s alive now! What’s there to be afraid of?

from anyone else the idea of a pinky promise would be ridiculous. but even with her friend’s exaggerated pout and bubbly nature, beau can feel the earnestness in the request. 

it makes a soft ache settle beneath her ribs. 

with a quiet, affectionate breath of amusement she leans in and sticks out her own pinky, hooking jester’s tight. it’s got to be the first time in her life she’s done this and she wonders, briefly, at the odd weight of it. 

“ jess i promise i’m not going anywhere. i mean what would i even do without you? “ 

her tone is meant to be flippant; joking. but her words catch a little, betraying an emotion she didn’t realize she was feeling quite so strongly. 

“That particular piece of jewelry on your left horn would catch sixty seven percent more light if you moved it three quarters of a centimeter to the right.” It is an answer that has come without a question, but sometimes Janet really just can’t help herself. Things come out of her mouth. Little facts she needs to share. ( It happens, when you know pretty much everything automatically. )

sending love and well wishes, from start to finish, this is mollymauk, as you may already know. i should hope this letter finds you well, finds you in good health or good humor at the very least. if it arrives on time, no delays or otherwise, the seasons should still be cold, though the air is beginning to warm as we head back into spring, into a season of growth.

how are you, jester? i feel as though i haven’t seen you in years. we travel a lot now, i know, but nothing has ever been quite the same as travelling with you lot, with you especially. whenever my spirits begin to dampen, i need only remember how we met, how much of a charming person you are, and that helps a great deal. i’m always happy to receive messages of sending from you. feel free to send me as many, any time.

i hope this letter finds you well. i hope the others are well. are you keeping those little creatures of yours in good health? the poor bastards, they go through more than we do, don’t they? their resilience is matched only by yours, my friend. which i pray stays strong for you, and for the rest of the nein.

i love to hear from you, sending or otherwise, but i also very much enjoy having letters to refer back to when i miss your funny little voice. if you have the chance and should feel up to it, we pass by a particular inn very often, i will send the enclosed addressing for you to be able to mail it accordingly.
