Sandor and Astris were committed to each other enough for him to take her away from Kingās Landing when he left, but he still had this undercurrent of doubt that she really loved him.
He was waiting for her to get bored of him, or to get too scared of everything going on with the war, or to decide it was all too much and want to go back to her family. Then when he had that near death experience after the fight with Brienne he was sure that would be it. If he couldnāt protect her, wasnāt useful, that would be the final straw and she would be gone. But she stayed. She stayed by his side and took care of him even when he was nasty and tried to push her away, to hurt her before she could hurt him. She stayed. After that he had no more doubt that he was hers and she was his.
They never got officially married, but they considered themselves married. They didnāt need any church or gods or septons for that. It was an unspoken thing for a long time. The first time Astris referred to Sandor as her husband he was flustered, he couldnāt look her in the eyes or talk to her for hours, but he was very happy.
