ok the number one thing to know about am.psy. is that bret easton ellis has said in interviews, verbatim, in black and white, that patrick bateman is a reflection of himself. he fully wrote patrick to be gay; in the most literal and accurate way, he is an intentionally coded gay character. yay!!
the whole story is metaphorical for the issues plaguing the gay community in the 80s, and the internalized homophobia ellis was grappling with in his own life. uhh it's hard for me to explain without going scene-by-scene, but so much of the violence in the movie is representative of gay intimacy, and how inseparable that was from violence (or fear of violence) in the 80s, mostly due to hate crimes and the aids epidemic.
it's hard for me to have in-universe theories about patrick bateman as a character because i've gotten so used to watching the movie as a big metaphor, but i wish i could beam into everyone's brain that YES patrick is a HOMOSEXUAL. :)!
