As part of the decade long project to develop Samjiyon into a modern socialist utopia and tourist destination, the city's airport is being redeveloped
The new project will significantly upgrade the airport, according to images of the proposed construction broadcast by Korean Central Television on July 18. The images showed a new terminal building, carrying the name “Samjiyon International Airport” connected to a railway station and an expanded apron on the airfield.
Commercial satellite imagery from September 20 shows construction is well underway. The terminal is taking shape and supports for the new railway station have been set. Work is also progressing on what will become the new rail bed
