BTW @amoreanonyname and @topsambottomdean, you both seem willing to take what Dean said while under the spectre’s control as gospel.  Does that mean that we should also believe what Sam said and did while under Dr. Ellicott’s influence in 1.10 Asylum as literal truth?  Sam actually shot Dean and would’ve killed him if Dean had given him a loaded gun, not just threatened him, but we excuse what happened as purely the ghost’s fault.  So why not here?
[Gosh, this post (x) is getting really long]
There is a big difference in what they say and what they do being under some influence (it really doesn't matter what kind of). And apparently because of it there is a confusion.
3 episodes come to my mind to start:
I don’t pay much attention to what they do being under the influence, basically because they just want to KILL each other. Plain and simple. Sam would have killed Dean, if he had bullets in Asylum, Dean would have killed Sam, if he hadn’t been stopped by Bobby in Sex and Violence and Dean would shot Sam, if he hadn’t been stopped by Garth in Southern Comfort. Period.
But we do know for sure that they don’t want to kill each other in a normal state (and if this happened, the one who would have survived would immediately have resurrected the deceased one if he survived the psychotrauma of soulmate killing in general, of course, lol) and in this moment this confusion appears:
if we cannot believe what they do under the influence, why should we believe what they say under the influence?
Because. =) Because the writers use these conversations as a kind of truth serum.
Because Winchesters are not the kind of guys who, at the first tension, are ready to talk heart to heart with each other. They are silent about what bothers them, they lie that everyhing is OK and suppress the anger and pain. Because they are tough guys and all these snotty revelations and psychological nonsense are not about them. But the viewer SHOULD know what is boiling in them, what they really care about. Therefore, the writers use conversations under some influence as truth serum. In all 3 episodes I made reference to, everything that the brothers said to each other is truth, this is pain, anger and frustration, all the crap that bothers them.
And although they almost always say afterwards that they don’t remember what they said or didn’t mean it, it’s still true.
SAM: I am normal. I’m just telling the truth for the first time. I mean, why are we even here? ’Cause you’re following Dad’s orders like a good little solider? Because you always do what he says without question? Are you that desperate for his approval?
And literally in the next episode 1.11 Scarecrow absolutely normal Sam said exactly the same things to Dean that he said under the influence.
SAM: I don’t understand the blind faith you have in the man. I mean, it’s like you don’t even question him.
DEAN: Yeah, it’s called being a good son!
And Sam becomes so angry (same as in Asylum) that he leaves Dean in the middle of the night and walk away.
Same with Sex and Violence
DEAN: Well, I don't know when it happened. Maybe when I was in hell. Maybe when I was staring right at you. But the Sam I knew, he's gone. And it's not the demon blood or the psychic crap. It's the little stuff. The lies. The secrets. The phone calls to Ruby for one.
SAM: So I need your say-so to make a phone call?
DEAN: That's the point. You're hiding things from me. What else aren't you telling me?
...
SAM: You're too busy sitting around feeling sorry for yourself. Whining about all the souls you tortured in hell. Boo hoo.
DEAN: Well, let's go through some of Sammy's greatest hits. Drinking demon blood, check. Being in cahoots with Ruby. Not telling me that you lost your soul. Or how about running around with Samuel for a whole year, letting me think that you were dead while you're doing all kinds of crazy.
Well, someone will say that there are problems with this
Well, not really. I really think that Dean, being in that state of mind, feeling all the pain and frustration that his soulmate was not looking for him in purgatory, feels it. Dean knows Benny not for long, their relationship is simple and clear, no secrets, no hard choices, just killing monsters on a daily basis. Dean Winchester's wet dream.
Unfortunately their life with Sam is not that simple. Dean has known his brother all his life, and their relationship is full of secrets, unspoken words, pain and disappointment. Not to mention Sam's last hit - trying to leave Dean behind and get a normal life with Amelia. Put that way Benny truly looks like an ideal for Dean (it's kinda Benny hasn't had time to disappoint Dean, and Dean is disappointed in people very easily).
