Little Red Riding Hood -- Thoughts: 3/20/19
In Charles Perrault’s version of Little Red Riding Hood, he keeps it short, sweet, and to the point. There is much less detail given to readers than what we receive from the Grimm version. The story also meddles a very quick and concise ending. The message in this story is seemingly to teach young girls not to talk to strangers, no matter how nice they may appear. It is interesting that at this time that was what was to be taught, rather than teaching people to not be psychopaths. Anyways, we get an unhappy ending in that Riding Hood is left to be gobbled up by the wolf. In the Grimm version, we get more of a “happy” ending in that we are miraculously able to cut open to find grandmother and Little Red alive (wow!). We also get the fulfilling feeling of revenge when the wolf is dead at the end. The two differing endings are interesting as well. Perrault seemed to have a lazy telling of the story and delivered similarly to how it would have been orally. Grimm wanted to tell the whole story and give more details to paint a better picture in the readers mind. It was also interesting in what the authors chose to bring the sick grandmother. Personally, if I was dying, I would prefer cake and wine over a pot of butter. Carter’s version was much more thoughtful. Compared to Perrault, it was beautifully written and kept the same storyline but with an even better telling that the Grimm version.
