JoJo Is LEFT HANDED !!
- But it’s not easy growing up in the Catholic faith and being left handed
- Because the left hand is the hand of the devil and would not be tolerated
- So growing up in the church in Harlem, whenever Jojo was caught writing or eating or doing anything with his left hand he would be immediately punished
- The punishment varied between being slapped on the hand with a ruler, whipped with a belt, and being sent to bed without supper. Sometimes it was more severe, but it was never easier.
- But his left hand always ends up being tied behind his back.
- He’s forced to memorize, recite, and transcribe the Bible Verse Matthew 25:31-33
“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.”
- He can still recite it at a moment’s notice.
- In both English and Latin
- He tried so hard to be “normal”
- To do everything with his right hand
- But it just didn’t work. He couldn’t make it do what he wanted it to.
- When Jojo finally found his new home in Manhattan, he continued to try and use his right hand.
- Not that he did much with it anyway except use a spoon
- The first day Mike sees Jojo use his left hand he’s writing in a journal in the bunkroom about three months after he joined the newsies
- Jojo doesn’t notice when Mike walks up to him and places a hand on his shoulder
- Completely startled Jojo immediately drops the pencil and his heart starts racing
- “Forgive me Sister, Cum autem venerit Filius hominis in gloria su-”
- “Jojo?”
- He turns frantic, tears beginning to spill from the corners of his eyes and his hands quivering
- “Hey, hey, what’s wrong?”
- “I’m so-sorry. I didn’t mean to- I”
- Mike wraps him in a tight hug, confused as to why his friend is apologizing, but he decides not to question it.
- It’s not until much later that Jojo tells the whole story.
- The first time Jojo sees Jack using his left hand he is Stunned!
- He seemed to do it so care free and none of the other newsies said anything about it either.
- “Are you possessed by the devil too?”
- Jack just chuckles “Nah, kid. Well, depending on who you ask maybe. But none of that matters here. No one cares if you use your right hand or your left or your toes!”
- Jojo smiles at that, “So I’m not going to Hell?”
- “Not by a long shot, kiddo.”
- Jojo is still weary about using his left hand. But he feels like he could face the devil if he has his brothers by his side.
