When researching what to do in Ho Chi Minh City, not many options came up. We definitely expected absolute reams of suggestions, and many lists offered ideas like “take a moped somewhere” or “eat a banh mi” - you know, revolutionary stuff!
One suggestion which did not disappoint Saigon Central Post office and the Saigon Notre-Dame Basilica which lies across the street.
When we visited, unfortunately, the cathedral was undergoing maintenance. Of course, this is wonderful, but it meant that we couldn’t enter the impressive structure, which was bolstered by scaffolding. We could only see the facade and the Mother Mary statue which welcomes worshipers of both Jesus and architecture.
Nevertheless, we loved seeing this famous building - which was only matched by the gorgeous Saigon Central Post Office.
A vast and symmetrical building, butter-yellow accented by white frosting and wrought iron, the Saigon Central Post Office was built between 1886 and 1891. It was designed by Alfred Foulhoux, though it is often credited to Gustave Eiffel (who did build the Long Bien Bridge in Hanoi and the Trang Tien Bridge in Hue).
In two smalls gardens outside were large monuments to the hard work of postal workers - which seemed especially appropriate considering that they probably delivered post by bicycle in a constant tropical heatwave!
Inside, the huge vaulted ceilings offered a little respite from the smothering heat, and a large portrait of Ho Chi Minh watched over the postal workers, vendors, and tourists alike.
Old phone booths had been cleverly converted into ATMs, there were clocks showing different times all over the world, and two large maps showed the telegraph lines across south Vietnam and Saigon and its surrounds (pictured).
We loved seeing an old building which continues to serve its purpose, and will hopefully stand for many more years!
One really cool post office, thanks Uncle Ho! #buudienthanhpho #saigoncentralpostoffice #postoffice #hochiminhcity #saigon #vietnam #travel #traveler #travelphotography #travelblog #travelblogger #travelgram #instagram #blackberry #blackberrykeyone #passportready #tbt #throwbackthursday (at Saigon Central Post Office)
