“The doctor said that I’ll be better soon.”

Sugawara gives his signature winning smile, even while he’s attached to the hospital I.V. Nishinoya tightens his fists, unconvinced yet bites back his rage. He is happy that Sugawara seems to be doing better, his smile is still present, and he is eating more and more energetic than before. His silvery locks have regained their sheen glow and his ghostly pallor has been given color. Nishinoya wants to believe that Sugawara is doing better, truly he does. But he is afraid that if he looks away for even an instant, Sugawara will collapse and never get better. He is afraid that if his attention is diverted from the latter, he will lose him forever. 

But the bright smile that is plastered on his face brings relief to Nishinoya and he finds himself smiling back. 

“Okay.”

He clasps his hand within Sugawara‘s, lacing their fingers. He feels how thin his digits are, and shudders from the cold of his skin. He silently wishes that Sugawara is as good as he claims to be. 

“I have to go now,” Nishinoya whispers and Sugawara nods, still grinning. The silver haired male watches as Nishinoya closes the door behind him, and listens to the footsteps as they echo farther and farther away. Tears roll down Sugawara‘s cheeks, his breath hitches in his throat and he clenches his fists.

Sitting at his desk, Sugawara clicked his pen as he thought of the answers to his problems. The hour was late, far past his usual bed time and he was extremely fatigued. It didn't help that this set of problems was exceedingly difficult. Sighing loudly, the silver haired male drops his pen and it lands on the table with a click.

Sugawara feels a pair of hands travel down his spine. “What's wrong, Kou-chan?”

He grunts in abjuration. “Just some difficult questions, is all.’”

Oikawa slides his arm over Sugawara‘s shoulder and points at the paper. “I'm sure you know this one.”

He shoots the chocolate haired male a glance from the side, indignant. “Are you patronizing me?”

Oikawa gives a genuinely surprised look. “Of course not.”

He presses a kiss on Sugawara‘s forehead.

Sugawara taps his foot against the tiled floor, a tense rhythm follows as his foot makes contact with the ground; he pithily heaves a sigh before glancing at his watch and inspecting the crowds of people that pass in front of the coffee shop window.

He is anxious to meet with someone.

Sugawara sighs once more as the minutes slowly trickle away, the nervousness that racked his brain before dulled considerably, but the beating of his heart was still a loud cacophony that could not be stopped. With jittery hands, Sugawara reaches for his cup of coffee and takes a sip, thankful for the bitter taste that wrestles with his nerves. Now he only feels a strange numbness that is coupled with irrepressible excitement.

The person he is going to meet is a friend he made over the internet, and somehow they managed to set a date to get together in person. His name is Nishinoya Yuu.

He adjusts his blue scarf, which is supposed to serve as an identifier so that his friend recognizes him.

Sugawara once again settles for looking outside the window, in hopes that his friend will show up. Minutes pass and Sugawara gets drowsy, he blinks in order to chase the tiredness away, a yawn soon issues past his lips as someone approaches his table.

“Kiyoko, I love you! One day we’re going to get married,” a seven year old Koushi said, bringing the girl into a firm hug.

She nodded in agreement, arms wrapped around his small form.

“It’s a promise!”

 Years have passed since then, and they kept their innocent promise.

Standing at the altar,

the pair smiled softly at one another, as their eyes locked,

a bright cerulean ocean lost in the rich brown earth.

“I’ll always love you,” he said as he pressed a tender kiss to her lips.

Nishinoya couldn’t understand.

After graduation, Koushi spoke to him less and less; his texts were unanswered, calls were dropped, and the former setter refused to see him in person whenever he stopped by. It wasn’t just irritating; it was offending and upsetting as well. Frustration built up in the depths of the young libero’s heart as he continued to wait for Koushi to speak to him.

And finally, after two agonizing weeks of silence, Koushi showed up at his front door.

“So are you going to explain why you’ve been ignoring me?”

Yuu wasn’t sure what was happening when he heard faint buzzing in his ears, as if someone was speaking to him but he couldn’t understand the words.

An intense pain cut through each of his nerves, as if someone was slowly wrenching a knife into his skin. He slowly opened his eyes, squinting at the light, and he saw the silhouette of a familiar figure.

“Kou...shi...”

His voice left his throat but even he couldn’t hear it anymore. He tried reaching his hand out, but there was only numbness.

Then he understood.

He was dying.
