this episode (s5ep16) is so good bc it just made me wanna analyze even more :)!!
House genuinely values being a good the best doctor more than anything, more than his pain.
In my opinion, I think the previous episode's patient led him to this. (The husband who had pain all over and tried to kill himself) "This is what your future looks like" "i remember when the painkillers made it tolerable" and that episode focused on House taking alot of Vicodin.
He started taking Methadone to remove his pain, which tracks, but he describes it as "heroin without the high," he is an addict but he knows his limits and doesn't want to be high all the time to ruin his thinking capabilities while working. (But it ended up backfiring)
And he was doing such a good job at living again that Wilson and Cuddy were starting to rationalize him taking methadone. "He's no longer in pain anymore" "You shaved?"
Him no longer using his cane is kinda abelist bc his muscles still aren't there, it's just there's no pain anymore but whatever
But House realizing at the end that his painlesness made him misdiagnose the kid, he panicked, because yes he didn't believe in any reason to do the mri, but he didnt have his usual paranoia to stop him. That's what made him stop taking the Methadone.
Despite putting on this armour of not caring to about patients, he cares way too much he'd rather be in pain if his patients get to be cured.
And it isn't that he doesn't like his job, he immediately tried to make another diagnostic department in another hospital. He likes helping and curing patients.
I don't know how to end this but it just hurts me watching him choose between having a painful life so he can be the best doctor, and a pain-free life but he's just like any doctor. And a person just as messed up as he is, he'd rather go through hell than be ordinary.
