TW for graphic discussing of depression and mentions of suicide
Smallville! Clark being one of the most depressed but also one of the more inarticulate versions of Clark is something dreadful because he is almost completely incapable of describing the anguish he feels for merely existing to anyone. I see him speaking with others on the show- humans and aliens- and there is a cruelty in their lack of understanding. His experiences and existence is so disorienting for him, so isolating and in the beginning, down right body horror-esque. All he wants is for someone to understand or even just listen to his poor attempts at explaining his plights but every time he’s made out to be selfish, ungrateful or self loathing. But are his wants any more selfish than any person’s desire for community? Can he be eternally and unwaveringly grateful for a power that has brought him so much hardship? Can he grow up hearing he is the center of the universe for so many people without feeling responsible when those people’s lives fall apart or end?
Clark spends five seasons pleading to just be normal before just giving up and turning himself over to his destiny. He said he wanted to be normal so many times it sort of lost it meaning but what he meant is he wants to be able to want for a future with the same ferocity as his human peers without feeling like he is compromising his identity or unfairly getting ahead. He wants to make mistakes without the world shattering. He wants to feel whole in mediocrity; that he is worthwhile even if all he accomplishes is waking up and being kind. He wants to love and be loved. He doesn't want blind devotion or a relationship on the foundation of lies; he wants ease and mundanity that he can infuse with the spark of life by being around people he cares about.
There is something so soul crushing that he feeling a life like that is out of reach for him. I watch the light and optimism drain from his eyes with every passing episode and just hope he finds joy again before the darkness takes him. This season he doesn't try to stop brainiac when it tries to kill him as a baby so he never exist and him explaining to Chloe why feel so much like suicide that I almost threw up.
Characters and Ships
As it was mentioned in our FAQ posts, shipping is allowed in the zine, so it is time to expand on the subject.
For our zine we stick to the rule: “If a character wasn’t shown clearly dying on the screen, or there is no prove of them being actually dead, they may be considered to still be alive.”
So such characters as Morgan Edge (mentioned to be missing in a Daily Planet’s article in Season 8, though twice said to be dead and never actually shown to be turned into the person trying to kill Lex and Clark in Episode 8 Season 3 (Shattered) via plastic surgery, after being presumed dead in Episode 2 Season 3 (Phoenix).) or Tess Mercer (Lutessa Luthor) (who was never shown after supposedly dying in Lex’s arms after being stabbed and drawing her last breath, considering Lex still could have called ER, especially after his memories were whipped) can be safely optimistically called still alive.
(Remember Greg Arkin (The Bug Boy) who seems to have died in Episode 2 Season 1 (Metamorphosis) and appeared alive and well in Episode 4 Season 10 (Homecoming)? That’s the same situation here.)
And we can also allow the possibility of Lionel Luthor being still among the living, because as Jor-El’s emissary and vessel he isn’t lacking importance and could have been resurrected by the kryptonian AI or put into altered state of existence, a stage of suspended animation right after the fall and then healed enough to recover, because his dead body wasn’t shown in the casket and there was no proof provided of it being not the case.
Everything depends on your vision.
So here is the list (not by any means final or complete), of the characters who may appear in the zine as living acting participants of various plots:
Clark Kent/Kal-El/Superman; Lex Luthor; Martha Kent/The Red Queen; Lionel Luthor; Lois Lane; Lana Lang; Chloe Sullivan/Watchtower; Oliver Queen/Green Arrow; Morgan Edge; Bart Allen/Impulse; Arthur Curry/AC/Aquaman; J’onn J’onzz/John Jones/Martian Manhunter; Tess Mercer/Mercy/Lutessa Luthor; Jor-El (AI, or in Lionel’s body); Kara Kent/Kara Zor-El/Linda Danvers/Supergirl; Zatanna Zatara; Pete Ross; Lucas Luthor; etc.
In Flashbacks and mentions only:
Jonathan Kent (May appear as an AI version of himself in the Fortress of Solitude.); Whitney Fordman; Jimmy Olsen; Dr. Virgil Swann; Dr. Brigette Crosby; Ryan James; etc.
Characters, who appeared in Smallville Season 11 comic books are also allowed to be a part of the zine (Bruce Wayne/Batman, Diana Prince/Wonder Woman, etc.).
Earth-2/Mirrorverse counterparts of characters’s life depictions in 15 years in our time are also welcome (Clark Luthor, Lois Queen, Jonathan Kent (-2), Martha Clark (Kent before divorce), etc.).
Once again we establish that all relationships between the characters should be depicted in the works in the zine as being more on platonic side.
No ships between family members are allowed.
(Note: If you write a piece sticking to Mionel, Clex is not allowed in it and vice versa, etc.)
Here is the list of the ships:
Het:
Clois – the ship between Clark Kent and Lois Lane.
Clana – the ship between Clark Kent and Lana Lang.
Chlark – the ship between Clark Kent and Chloe Sullivan.
Jonathan x Martha – the ship between Jonathan Kent and Martha Kent. (in flashbacks only, or in case of Earth-2/Mirrorverse scenarios)
Mionel – the ship between Martha Kent and Lionel Luthor.
Lexana – the ship between Lex Luthor and Lana Lang.
Lollie – the ship between Lois Lane and Oliver Queen.
Chlollie – the ship between Chloe Sullivan and Oliver Queen.
Zeeiver – the ship between Zatanna Zatara and Oliver Queen.
Tollie – the ship between Tess Mercer and Oliver Queen.
Chlex – the ship between Chloe Sullivan and Lex Luthor.
Kex – the ship between Lex Luthor and Kara Zor-El.
Aquamera – the ship between Arthur Curry and Mera.
Slash:
Clex – the ship between Clark Kent and Lex Luthor.
Clollie – the ship between Clark Kent and Oliver Queen.
Ledge – the ship between Lionel Luthor and Morgan Edge.
Femslash:
Tess x Lois – the ship between Tess Mercer and Lois Lane.
Chess – the ship between Chloe Sullivan and Tess Mercer.
Chlana – the ship between Chloe Sullivan and Lana Lang.
If the ship of your choice isn’t included in the list, feel free to mention it.

Chloe Sullivan?
I saw someone say that they (as in producers) considered having Chloe become Lois Lane and that existed as an option before they casted Erica. And whether this is true or not doesn’t really matter because the very idea of that is sooooo interesting. Largely because it makes sense, like a lot of sense. Chloe is a journalist, she’s driven, she’s smart, and her and Clark have history and potential. Also her fake death, or even just her using Lois as a pen name because of what happened with Lionel and the Daily Planet, would have made her changing her name very plausible. Plus adding another female member of the cast whose character was a romantic interest for Clark, and therefore adding someone else to pit against the existing women on the show, always kind of bothered me. Their role in the story was always somewhat limited to whether they had Clark’s attention and the viewers’ attention, whether they were appealing enough or if they could be used and it didn’t always feel faithful to their characters.
Not to mention the whole, “I’m the girl of your dreams masquerading as your best friend.”
Chloe becoming Lois would have been a shocking and intriguing way to introduce Lois into the story and challenge the viewers’ expectations of the show. With an origin story where we all know the ending, we all know what Clark will become and who he will end up with, it would have been a great way to surprise the audience, to show them that there’s still a possibility for creativity.
I still love the Lois that we got, but I haven’t been able to get this fact or this possibility out of my head.
