the types of thoughts I experience on a daily basis.

morning thoughts: gentle thoughts to start the day, carried on a cool windy breeze. most often, thoughts about the day and the things it’ll bring and the people to see and the cats to pet.

travel thoughts: bus, train, car, walking, anything. usually a good place to observe other people, rest, think about others. sometimes you wonder about the lives the strange familiars lead, and the brief eye contact you make with the people you know by sight makes the world seem slightly better.

“life autopilot mode”: random thoughts that have no purpose in your mind. you chuck them out the door but they boomerang back. strings of silken thought that you try to knit into something tangible, palpable, but more often results in failed craft. eyes turn glassy and glazed with indifference.

multitasking thoughts: thoughts that jump back and forth, from different subjects altogether. they’re slippery and hard to catch, but important to remember. slightly annoying at times when you need to really focus.

night thoughts: an overview of the day, little snippets of conversation and eventful happenings that slip into your mind, wondering about the things you said today, little things you notice people do. feels like you’re running a marathon through the thoughts as the wind whips your face. yet, the calm before the storm.

panicked thoughts: can happen anywhere, anytime, without warning. grabs you and plunges down into a spiral of insanity, making you question everything and doubt anything. Logic exists no more in this world, and lures you into gullibility. some of the worst thoughts to patrol the mind.

like, I’ll become the best of friends with people, and can’t look at their name differently because I’ve associated so many memories with that name. Especially if it’s an uncommon name.

because you’re so used to calling someone by a name and when you use it for the first time to someone else, the memories can’t help but rush back into your head like blood. and you have to pretend like everything’s fine because you don’t want to hold any sort of prejudice against this new person because of something they didn’t ask for.

and on the other hand, when you’ve ever dealt with people you strongly dislike, you form an association with that name. you’ve grown to speak it with that little bit of spite you can afford and just a sprinkle of sarcasm in your tone that would maybe hint to them that you don’t feel like talking to them now. you can’t look at that name the same way anymore because you’re so used to defending yourself against it.

But I can say that after having worked with a lot of people from different backgrounds and different schools, handwriting is something very personal. There’s something in the way the tool scratches the paper, and the way the pen slips into your hand as you write distant poetry. Handwriting is influenced by the people around you and your experiences, and allows you to speak without speaking. And there’s something calming about running the tips of your fingers over the faint indentations of someone’s handwriting in a letter, knowing that they made their own mark in this piece and now you have it to hold, in your trembling hands. It almost feels like an invasion of privacy, to examine someone’s handwriting and peruse the little quirks and tiny flairs in the shape of the characters and alphabetical letters. Because it tells a story.
