Enjoy!
Moments after her angry, sullen fiancé slammed the door to their bedroom behind him, Jade opened it and shut it gently behind her. Hesitantly, she closed some of the distance between them, the gauzy length of her gown floating around her. Ryder brooded, his head pressed against his forearm snugly positioned against the window frame. "Did you see the look on their faces?" Jade sighed softly, registering all his emotions: fear, pain, anger, spite, frustration, helplessness. "They don't take me seriously. They probably won't ever." "Ryder-" He spun around but didn't move an inch towards her. The intensity in his eyes should have scared her, but it didn't. She understood it. She resonated with it. It filled the energy buzzing between them with a heightened awareness. "I don't know what's worse." His shoulders slumped in on themselves and the ferocity faded from his gaze. "That they think you're only marrying me because I'm going to be the next baron, or the truth; that you were mine first and my father stole you from me. And I let him. That the only reason you're mine now is because he's dead, and I wasn't even man enough to kill him myself." Jade closed the distance between them before he could say another word and clutched his shoulders. "Ryder, stop. You'll go mad thinking about the what ifs. You don't know what they're thinking. You can't possibly." "Tell me they aren't thinking that then," he demanded. "Tell me and maybe I can maintain my sanity." She gripped his face and forced him to keep his eyes only on hers. "What those people need right now is a baron. Someone who will protect them and fight for them and provide for them. Show them you can do that and you'll have their undying loyalty, just like your father did." He stiffened. "I won't be my father." "You'll be better." She paused and then took a breath. "Because you'll show these people what it means to live in the Badlands under your rule. Your power will be unmatched and your legacy will live on far longer than your father's ever could." For a long while he said nothing, and she held tight to him. Her eyes were as fiercely intent as his had been when she first strode into the room and he turned to speak to her. Then he kissed her. Hard, passionate, and unyielding. He pulled her closer till she was pressed tightly against him and then loosened the pins in her hair so her locks tumbled over his fingers. His hands wandered, caressing every curve as she eagerly undressed him; jacket first, then button down shirt and the belt buckle wedged snugly between them. She felt her dress flutter to the ground and realized she hadn't even been aware of him pushing the fabric off of her. "You were born to be a baroness," he whispered hotly against her mouth. Her hands glided along his chest and stomach until her painted nails turned into lightly piercing glass. Then she stopped to kiss the skin over his heart and set her hands on his waist. She tipped her head up so their eyes met again. "I was born to be your baroness," she said, the feel of his hands on her face immediately following the whispered promise. After one soft, gentle brush of the lips, his kisses grew rough again and he spun her around to the bed, meaning to push her onto it but ending up falling with her. Excited and thrilled beyond measure, they both scooted back until they reached the head of it and then wrapped around each other, forgetting everything and everybody outside that room. Ryder's reckless impatience to rise to and above his father's station always stood in the way to a clear victory. But he had the one thing he'd lost that he thought he might never have again. He had Jade. Her support would pave the way to making him the best baron the Badlands had ever seen.
