Awesome question, and I had a very hard time narrowing it down to just five, but I (almost) did!

1. Going to count an entire ballet as a work of art here because technically I’m not wrong, and because the Millicent Hodson reconstruction of the first Rite of Spring performance really encapsulates things I love in music and art in general: discordance, unease, heaviness.

2. The calendars from Les Très Riches Heures du duc de Berry. I’m not sure why, but I’ve been fascinated by them since I was young and to this day I can lose myself poring over the details in each one.

3. Her Secret is Patience by Janet Echelman, as well as her other sculptures. Home town bias here, plus the way it looks like a wormhole or a tear in the fabric of space. Plus I’m just a sucker for installation art that looks drastically different depending on perspective and lighting.

4. You Who Are Getting Obliterated in the Dancing Swarm of Fireflies by Yayoi Kusama. I could literally spend hours inside this piece of art, PLUS sentimental value for being the piece that introduced me to this fascinating artist. 

5. Melissa S. McCracken’s song illustrations (this one is Karma Police by Radiohead). Oftentimes an abstract visualization of a song will leave me a bit flat, but for some reason each one of hers has me nodding along, “Oh dang, yeah. Yeah!” They just jive with me. (also this post makes me recall that @oneiroteuthis and I are “orbiting calendar” buds!)

6. BONUS: I DARE YOU TO TELL ME THIS IS NOT ART.

7. EXTRA BONUS: I think it might still be too new to me to properly qualify as a favorite, but I really really like Lisa Park’s Eunoia and I think more people should see it!

I’m going to interpret this as the series and not the specific character because that’s how I feel like rolling tonight!

I first discovered it on TV when I was 14. It came on in the same block as Gargoyles, and as much as I loved/love the show, the gender ratio always irked me. But then BOOM: all female-show about girls MY EXACT AGE. I was blown away.

The show tied into my love of space and sci-fi/fantasy in a way that was very unique (to me, at the time).

Girls supporting girls.

Girls LOVING GIRLS: Haruka and Michiru had not made it to the U.S. yet—not even their incestuous cousin-makeover versions—but we had the internet at home by then and I was able to read about everything that had been changed and everything that had yet to be dubbed, and even though I didn’t know why yet I was immediately hooked on Haruka.

This show is actually why I started learning Japanese. “UGH, FOR ANIME”, yes I know, but anyway: I wanted to be able to write out all their names and other words from the show in Japanese, so I taught myself kana and some kanji (I did not actually start studying the language systematically until later, when I realized “well fuck, if I already know how to write it…”) Practicing a new writing system actually proved to be a very effective way to tame my anxiety in school, because the repetitive writing exercises were soothing and something I could do at any time.

Obviously the world-building of the series created an ample sandbox to play in w/r/t original characters, and boy howdy did I have fun with that.

I am so sorry for the loss of your boy. I love you.

Z, I'm so sorry. :( He was a good dragon and I know you gave him a good life.

Thank you, all. I really appreciate it. It really feels lonely here without him around, but everyone’s kind words made me feel less lonely and that means a lot.

It’s been a rough week; I’ve lost two beardies before, but they died of old age. Hot Sauce wasn’t old, so it’s been hard moving past the thoughts of what I might have done wrong along the way to exacerbate or even cause the illness that killed him, even though I know there’s no point in thinking about it now.

But I have plans for a little memorial for him. And I shall do him a small lizard honor for Day of the Dead when the season rolls around. And I guess that’s that.

cider - a food that you disliked as a child but now enjoy?

Oooh, there are MANY in fact, most of them vegetables: tomatoes, peas, asparagus, olives, squash, anchovies, most kinds of dumplings... I was super-adverse to a lot of food textures as a child, and though I would eat any food put on my plate because I couldn’t let it go to waste, I often sat at the table for an hour plodding through meals. But... I guess that perseverance is how I came to enjoy those foods eventually?

Biggest turn-around has got to be onions, though. I was once scared away from pizza for a full year because I bit into a tiny piece of onion that accidentally made its way onto my cheese pizza, and now onions may be my favorite food. Onion soup? Pickled red onion? Onion on pizza? Onion on sandwiches? Onion on onion? Can this food incorporate onion in some way shape or form? Make it happen.

crow - which school subject do you wish you had an aptitude for?

English. ENGLISH. GOD, it was the bane of my academic existence. It wasn’t that I couldn’t analyze a text or write an essay, but the process was for some reason so slow and excruciating for me that I would honestly compare it to crawling on my hands and knees on a carpet made of sandpaper.

I have been out of high school for almost twenty years and I still get a swell of anxiety just thinking about writing a report for school.

I once negotiated with a teacher to let me skip the final research paper for the semester and just take a C for the class even though I had an A up until that point because the thought of writing even one more paper was too much for me to handle.
