The relationship of Alan and the sticks aren’t really family/parental. 

At early times Alan acted more like a warden to the sticks making sure they didn’t destroy or mess with his computer much, Orange interacting the most with Alan by drawing together and in return Alan won't delete Orange friends. As times pass by, they manage to interact more on friendly terms and slowly build their relationship to be more like friends. Alan now acts more like the older friend figure to them, who teaches them stuff while keeping them from trouble or getting hurt too much.
