For all of my friends who are worried that the Russians have your face now... you already gave all your info away! Guess what, it’s not just to Russia but to just about any other country that has any part in any digital service product. Do you think that these US companies have your best interest in mind? US Banks and health organizations have been screwing you over with your own info for a long time. Once I started getting into licensing I realized what we actually don’t own anymore. Google- facial recognition, location, buying patterns, e-mail and message content, photos, search patterns, demographic info, financial info and in some cases fingerprint. Facebook family of apps- facial recognition, buying and financial info, friend/family connections, location, message and photo information, phone info, demographic info, recording your conversations and your search patterns. Banks and credit cards- all of them share your info and sell your purchase patterns and demographic info, they also have your financial info, location and fingerprint info Linked in- location info, business and job history with relevant dates, listens to your conversations and uses your messages, demographic info and connections Android and iPhone- this has just about everything in your life on it. Fingerprint, facial recognition, location, all relevant dates, all text messages and vocal messages, demographics, buying patterns and uses it to give to every other app. Amazon- facial recognition, buying and financial data, demographics etc. Hospitals/drug companies own all your vital health info, demographics, location etc etc etc. I could go on for days. You’re already sold down the river in just about every information point. The fact that this one just happens to be Russian, who cares? I get sent messages from supposed friend now located in west Africa daily. I’m sure Asia has another version of you already. FLOOD THE INTERNET WITH CONTENT. Since May, Twitter brought the ban hammer down on over 70 million accounts. That’s nearly 1 million accounts every single day. The affected accounts mostly consist of spammers, bots, propaganda accounts, and trolls. This mass digital purge comes in the wake of increased criticism toward Twitter and other social media platforms whose critics say they don’t do enough to protect their users from spam and abuse As any Twitter user can attest, a huge influx of bots invaded the platform during the 2016 U.S. presidential election. High profile media coverage of Russian propaganda and troll accounts have has severely hurt Twitter’s public image, and this ban wave is undeniably a response to the criticism. While Twitter arguably got off lighter than Facebook (whose CEO Mark Zuckerberg infamously had to testify before Congress), they definitely have a long road ahead of them in regaining user trust. After the bot-infested events of Brexit and the 2016 election, Twitter is taking bot detection much, much more seriously. Additionally, Twitter purged accounts that spread hate speech or abuse. More and more celebrities are choosing to stay off of Twitter xdue to the torrents of abuse they receive. For years, Twitter’s term’s of service allowed for banning hate speech and abuse. But recent enforcement has been far more vigorous. It can be extremely tricky to balance the ideas of free speech, hate speech, and abuse, so it remains to be seen how Twitter users react to the crackdown and how, if at all, the user experience improves. If you’ve been following @capitolfilemag since I took over as #eic you’ve probably noticed some illustration use. It’s been fun working with fellow @artjamz team member @chelloanne to create these. For our latest issue, in the “bot or not” article, we created avatars for some of the more notorious #Russianbots. I paired each with some snarky copy (which I enjoy). I really love the process of creating these pages from just an idea and then seeing them come to life in print a few weeks later. Can you guess if this tweet was by a #BOTORNOT ? 🤖 Bot or Not? Life in Russia is hard. Sitting in a Soviet-style facility and trolling away for 12-hour shifts pretending to be American. No breaks. Probably can’t even get an ergonomically correct chair, either. And forget about a cappuccino maker. Still, these five industrious, state-sponsored actors stood out amongst their 3,814 Internet Research Agency (IRA) peers. Can you spot a bot? Apply your cyber-savvy to these tweets. @TEN_GOP Twitter announced over 1.4 million users interacted with the IRA troll factory. One of its stars was @TEN_GOP who amassed over 100,000 followers while masquerading as the official Twitter account of the Tennessee Republican Party. It was prolific in its pro-Trump content and was one of 13 Russian operatives indicted by Robert Mueller and the U.S. Department for engaging in operations to interfere with US elections and political processes. Its "backup" account @10_GOP was equally effective engaging the pro-Trump crowd, including the president himself. Hometown: Great Smoking Gun Mountains Hobbies: Catfishing Notable Retweets: Ann Coulter, Jake Tapper, Donald Trump Jr., Kellyanne Conway and the President of the United States, who replied, "So nice, thank you!" to @10_GOP’s tweet, "We love you, Mr. President!". It was particularly popular with Breitbart, Alex Jones and Pamela Geller Bot or Not? “Does anybody really believe the Bill Clinton and the U.S.A.G. talked about “grandkids” and gold for 37 minutes in plane on tarmac?” (at Washington, District of Columbia)
