AFRICANGLOBE – Charles Polevich was driving northbound on a Long Island road when he struck and killed Robert Maraj. The 64-year-old victim was walking when he was hit. Following the incident Polevich got out of his car to check on Maraj before driving off again. He neither called 911 nor attempted to help the victim. The accused man also allegedly hid the vehicle – a white Volvo – in his home garage and covered it with a tarp.

AFRICANGLOBE – A California woman, who in 1996 told police that her then-boyfriend was fatally stabbed by a Black man during a struggle at an apartment, was recently arrested in connection with his killing. According to Daily Beast, the suspect, identified as Jade Benning, called 911 to claim the supposed Black man had broken into the apartment and gotten into a physical altercation with her deceased boyfriend Christopher Hervey.

AFRICANGLOBE – The idea of a Black teen in his neighborhood set Vorce on a string of events that would leave Vorce without a job and the teen nearly killed. Hamilton was in the neighborhood that morning because he was working. He was a newspaper delivery man and he had many customers in Vorce’s neighborhood. Despite Hamilton being entirely innocent, Vorce, who was off-duty and out of his jurisdiction at the time, decided the follow the teen. Clearly confident that the young man was out of his place, Vorce called 911 and continued following the innocent paper boy.

AFRICANGLOBE – In a historic move, Michigan-based First Independence Bank has opened new locations across Minnesota, becoming the first-ever Black-owned bank in the state.

AFRICANGLOBE – In court documents filed Wednesday by the US Department of Justice (DoJ), federal prosecutors allege that in the early evening of January 6, 2021, far-right militia leader Stewart Rhodes called an intermediary of Donald Trump’s and requested to speak with the then president. The former US Army paratrooper, according to prosecutors, wanted Trump to “call upon groups like the Oath Keepers and forcibly oppose the transfer of power.”

AFRICANGLOBE – A federal judge in Minneapolis accepted a plea deal on Wednesday, May 4, in the case of Derek Chauvin, the former officer convicted of murdering George Floyd. U.S. District Judge Paul Magnuson said he plans to sentence the disgraced cop to 20 to 25 years in prison for violating Floyd’s civil rights.

AFRICANGLOBE – Jacksonville Sheriff’s Officer, Alejandro Carmona, was arrested for online child solicitation in March, and it was verified that he is the same officer involved in the police brutality case that made headlines last year after police broke a Black woman’s teeth in May 2020.

AFRICANGLOBE – Ethiopian Authorities on Tuesday said they had stopped international cyber-attack attempts targeting the massive Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and the country’s major financial institutions.

AFRICANGLOBE – I write in order to tell Black activists that it’s dangerous to be anti-racist, but regardless of whether we are or not, society violates us. Whiteness has transformed anti-racism into yet another stigma and this is yet another consequence of its ideological, still colonialist, dominance of Brazilian society. It is not news to anyone, not even whites, that racism is structural.

AFRICANGLOBE – When the British missionaries came to the Caribbean, particularly in Jamaica, Barbados and Antigua, “to convert and educate” the enslaved, they brought with them their own version of the Bible tailored to their activities. Entitled Select Parts of the Holy Bible for the Use of the Negro Slaves in the British West-India Islands, this Bible was a “shockingly bowdlerised version of the New- and Old Testaments” that was printed in England in 1807—the same year the British slave trade ended in the West Indies.
