Ruscus aculeatus, also known as butcher's-broom, growing wild in Greece. Learn more about our online courses on herbal medicine & aromatherapy in jointheflow.net Discover my books on bodywork and more: amzn.to/3xhaNey The common name “butcher’s broom” came from Europe, where butchers would bundle the shrub into a broom to sweep and cleanse their cutting blocks, due to the stiffness of the material. It was later discovered that the essential oil in the plant is antibacterial.) Europeans have been using the shrub as a laxative and diuretic for almost 2,000 years. Many cultures soaked the rootstock in water or wine to help alleviate abdominal complaints. In the first century CE, Greek physicians used butcher’s broom to treat kidney stones. In the 17th century, the English herbalist Nicholas Culpepper used butcher’s broom to help the healing of fractured bones. He recommended that patients take a decoction of the root (made by boiling the plant’s woody parts) orally along with spreading a poultice of the berries over the fracture. In Greece, the plant is known as "lagomilia" (rabbit apple) or even "hidden love" (!) because of the "hidden" red berries. Nowadays, this is one of the most classic herbs for chronic venous insufficiency and other circulatory problems. Consult your doctor if you suffer from circulatory issues, before taking this herb. #ruscusaculeatus #ruscus #butchersbroom #medicinalherbs #plantallies #greekflora #greekherbs #herbalism #herbalistsofinstagram #herbalmedicine #herbnerd #myherbalstudies #foraging #rewilding #healingherbs #herbalremedies Source: Herbalgram.org (at Βλαχοκερασιά Αρκαδίας) https://www.instagram.com/p/CfGNU3YoA93/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Never sure if I like today’s #oneadayplant or not! Ruscus aculeatus ‘John Redmond’ (m/f) (Self-fertile Butcher’s Broom) . Ruscus aculeatus as actually a fairly uncommonly seen British native plant, but plants are either male (who won’t Berry), or females (who will berry providing they are pollinated by a nearby male). Being self-fertile gives this form an advantage as a garden plant. . Like the species, this cultivar is slow growing and often fairly expensive to buy as a result. Rhizomatous, producing very firm, robust stems from beneath the ground as it slowly forms a mini thicket around 45-60cm (18” - 2’) tall and wide. What look like leaves are actually flattened stems, giving the appearance of being evergreen. Those stems and modified stems (leaves visually) are very tough and pointy, making it no fun to brush past bare legged. . The rounded, large pea-sized berries are glossy and handsome ripening to red, but inedible (harmful if eaten). . It’s interesting, but not very. Does it justify the cost to add to your garden over a Skimmia or Holly (Ilex sp.)? Probably not for many. It is very slow to produce commercially, which is why it is costly. . Not sure if it was ever used as a broom by a butcher, but it is robust enough to do that. . Takes a better photo than it might deserve... . #ruscus #ruscusaculeatus #ruscusaculeatusjohnredmond #butchersbroom #berries #shrubs #britishnativeplants #plants #gardening #plantingdesign #iplantsman #gardeningtips #gardeningadvice #prickly #notedible #gardens (at Crowborough, East Sussex) https://www.instagram.com/p/CHK3EGPgFCe/?igshid=rvmhb3fcwtxv

Yeni yılınız kutlu olsun.. (Happy new year).. İstanbul için “Yeni Yıl Bitkisi“ (New Year Plant for Istanbul)..
