GHOST IN THE SHELL (2017) Fantasmé au même titre qu’un cultissime AKIRA (1988), la version live-action de GHOST IN THE SHELL débarque sur nos écrans 28 ans après la naissance de son matériau d’origine: le chef-d’oeuvre éponyme de Shirow Masamune, pilier mondial du cyberpunk nippon tout comme son homologue GUNNM (1990) avait déjà eu ses adaptations au format long-métrage en 1995 et en 2004, chapeautées par Dieu Mamoru Oshii (AVALON, 2001). Les films d’Oshii, largement différents dans leur traitement que l’était le manga, ont su dépasser sa matière complexe pour l’élever à un niveau visuel et intellectuel différent mais tout autant qualitatif, tout comme le fit Ridley Scott avec BLADE RUNNER (1982) et le roman de Philp K.Dick, ces derniers influençant grandement le style cyberpunk en général. Comme quoi, on peut être différent, mais être fidèle et avoir bon goût: pourtant, le cas GITS mérite recontextualisation, car anticipateur bien plus qu’avant-gardiste. A l’époque, le manga et les films d’animation parlaient d’un Internet qui n’existait pas encore, de nanomachines, de hack, d’I.A., et d’autres termes quasi inconnus du grand public, ce futur fictionnel étant aujourd’hui une réalité en devenir. Le projet d’un film “live” était dans les tuyaux depuis un bon moment, défi international envers l’exigence d’une fanbase à l’affût. On y est. GHOST IN THE SHELL “International Soft Version 2017″ est là: on peut dire adieu à bon nombre d’attentes, de Batou (calqué sur ce bon vieux Schwary dans son design original -et doublé par son “officiel” Français sur les deux films d’Oshii) et son incarnation ratée -nous n’aborderons pas ici la figuration risible d’un Kitano comateux-, de son propos technologique hors-jeu (tant de câbles à l’heure du wireless...), de ses copies stylistiques datées (BLADE RUNNER, MATRIX (1999) et j’en passe, et pire, de l’absence de la véritable Motoko Kusanagi, whitewashing oblige... Tenant la main au néophyte pour le guider tout au long du film, GHOST IN THE SHELL n’égale aucune de ses adaptations animées: alors oui, il y aura du plan icônique et de la scène qui ÉTAIT culte, les deux souvent mélangés pour un résultat frustrant car en deçà de ce qu’on a connu. Révélant toutes choses bien trop tôt, l’histoire molle n’atteindra jamais la qualité des dialogues d’un INNOCENCE (2004) ou encore l’ingéniosité scénaristique d’une enquête de STAND ALONE COMPLEX (2005), la faute en partie à une Scarlett Johansson se croyant dans un LUCY 2, arpentant les rues d’une ville où fleurissent les sponsors en hologrammes géants (ADIDAS, HEINEKEN, etc...) quand elle ne recycle pas ses séquences “Veuve Noire” made in Marvel. De temps en temps, une bouffée d’air apparaît (Kuze, plutôt pas mal en fait) pour être aspirée par une réduction au néant (le spider-tank dont on a ôté toute vie). Exit la musique légendaire (rendez-nous Kenji Kawai!!!) et la montée en tension. Prenant ses spectateurs pour des enfants en bas âge, GHOST IN THE SHELL n’est même pas nul, ni bien: il est tellement formaté, mélangé et tronqué pour essayer de plaire à tout le monde qu’il en devient un consommable oubliable, donc; inutile. On espère que Rupert Sanders (SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN, 2012) suivra un autre chemin pour ses prochains films, et qu’il ne nous stérilisera pas d’autres licences cultes pour en subtiliser tout l’intérêt et l’identité. On se revoit en 2501 ;-) pour l’adaptation de GUNNM par James Cameron, quand il en aura fini avec AVATAR (2009) et ses soixante-quinze suites?  VIDE /20

This is a review and a rant. I've seen this movie twice now, once in theatres and just right now and i think it's really stupid that this film got negative reviews because of scarjo playing the major. Most of the reviews I've seen that shit can this film make it seem as if they watched an entirely different film. We live in an era where the studios are making remake after remake and taking existing properties and turning them into huge budgeted films. Now GITS is one of if not my most beloved anime of all time, just behind cowboy bebop. This film did not deserve the shit it got slinged at it. This is an American adaptation and although there are some minor flaws I think it can stand alongside the original. The original was about what does it mean to be human, this film is about how technology is corrupting us and we DONT EVEN SEE IT. I respect Rupert Sanders for taking this on and switching the theme and making it relevant to the world we currently live in. I mean the cinematography alone is astounding. Would I have wished they incorporated some of my other favorite characters more, sure. But what Sanders did with this film is something I find super important and taking a stand to say something I think everyone desperately wants to say too. I think this will eventually become a cult classic and an under appreciated film. Just because a critic tells you something, doesn't mean you should listen.
