In the United States, scientific racism justified African slavery to assuage moral opposition to the Atlantic slave trade. Alexander Thomas and Samuell Sillen described African men as uniquely fitted for bondage, because of their "primitive psychological organization". In 1851, in antebellum Louisiana, the physician Samuel A. Cartwright (1793–1863) wrote of slave escape attempts as "drapetomania", a treatable mental illness, that "with proper medical advice, strictly followed, this troublesome practice that many Negroes have of running away can be almost entirely prevented". The term drapetomania (mania of the runaway slave) derives from the Greek δραπέτης (drapetes, "a runaway [slave]") and μανία (mania, "madness, frenzy") Cartwright also described dysaesthesia aethiopica, called "rascality" by overseers.
The 1840 United States Census claimed that Northern, free Africans suffered mental illness at higher rates than did their Southern, enslaved counterparts. Though the census was later found to have been severely flawed by the American Statistical Association, to John Quincy Adams and others it became a political weapon against abolitionists. Southern slavers concluded that escaping Negroes were suffering from "mental disorders
After the Civil War, Southern (Confederacy) physicians wrote textbooks of scientific racism based upon studies claiming that black freemen (ex-slaves) were becoming extinct, because they were inadequate to the demands of being a free man—implying that African people benefited from enslavement.
Runaway Slave (Character idea)
Here's one for you Player's that want to play a character on the run from a backwards society [Note: You should probably get this one 'Ok-ed' with your Dm before you play]
In some places in the world today, one person owning another is not only common, but social smiled upon. This character has escaped the life of being someone else's property, how they ended up in that situation is something they only they may know. They know that no self respecting slave owner would allow their property to run off & are thus running away from the eventual 'slave hunters' that will come to them.
Writing Update: Wings
Contrary to what my updates might suggest, I have actually been writing lately. The first draft of City Under The Sun is finished, and a couple thousand more words were plugged into Nightshade. But for some reason actually writing updates has seemed unnecessarily difficult. Today, I was able to write the first draft of Wings, a short story I plotted yesterday about a runaway slave who finds a wounded gryphon and tries to patch it up. It was awesome getting started on Wings this morning--I'm trying a different landscape than the go-to 'town next to ambiguous woods' (which is neat and all but kinda limits plot options). Instead, most of this story takes place in the rocky foothills of the mountains, and it makes me wonder why I don't write about rocks more. Rocks are solid and cool and really, really fun to describe. My protagonist, Icanthus, is coming along well. Most of his characterization takes place in act two, but I'm already in love. There's something about slightly broken people trying to stand freely on their own two feet that's just captivating to me. I think my favorite thing about Wings, though, is the story's aesthetic. There's something about the bitter cold and the solid rocks and the giant gimpy-winged gryphon that just feels like a good story, and I'm really excited to see how it ends :) Love y'all and wishing everyone a fantastic evening!! 💕
