Fandom: Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 🌺 Character or Pairing Focus: Link x Ruto

Synopsis: She gave him her most prized possession.

Link walks into the next room he’s checking in on--an older man with a broken leg--and sees the patient’s daughter in the same spot he last saw her in: slumped forward with her chin in her hands, heels hanging from her fingers by the ankle straps.

Ruto acknowledges Link with a tired, lingering gaze and then an exhausted huff.

Honestly, he’d never know.

She didn’t tell him, she wasn’t going to; wasn’t going to mention how often she’d thought of him over the last seven years, hoping, honestly, that he’d come back. And maybe it was stupid to like the way he looked so much, cloaked in the blue of her people, donning those scales like he was meant to--except, well, wasn’t he meant to?

He squints at her through the water, vision not yet adjusted to these conditions, clear as it all might be to her. “Hey, Princess.” A small smile of recognition crosses his face. “It’s been some time.”

“What took you so long?”

His hand, large and deft, reaches behind and instinctively grasps the hilt of the sword, that sword, and rests there. Ready, probably as always, for a fight.

And he grins. He’s lovely. “Not carrying you this time.”

“You don’t need to.”

She lets herself float up, fins shimmering as she ascends, following that sage-siren call. He follows, almost as graceful as Zora, and she can feel him there behind her-- but does not say a word.

Notes: I still love and write Zelink, but I am a multishipper and I write whatever strikes me at a particular time. My goal is one longfic a month and one or more shortfics a week. I totally suck at this goal, but it’s a good one to have.
