rubyjul are so interesting because like. they're objectively bad parents. but they're also some of the most nuanced adults in the rrverse. because they're good people. ruby gave up her life to save bast from apophis. julius freed the gods with his death. to see his wife. which is a morally grey area tbf but it's also so human. but. neither of them stopped even for a second to think about their kids, when doing any of this. like those guys objectively should not have had kids.

when do you think julius realized that despite being the one who survived, he is no longer haunted by his wife('s memory). going to all the places they loved to go, hearing the echo of their emptiness; he was the one doing the haunting

thinking about how tkc is the only series where in a world of gods, the parents of the main characters still chose each other. julius and ruby kane knew about the gods walking the earth, and still they looked into each others eyes and said "i love you. i love your breathing chest and your blood and the lines that are slowly taking up space on your face, i love your faults and your resilience, i love you with your humanity and everything that comes with it."

thinking about how the way ruby died and julius spent years searching for a way to bring her back and to be with her again is so clearly a parallel to all the versions of orpheus and eurydice's myth, but in this case specifically of isis and osiris, but unlike them, rubyjul find happiness in the land of the dead, and julius literally becomes the lord of the dead . yeah ok nobody is doing it like them

rubyjul are a story about two scientists and college professors who start out as purely rational and gradually become more and more about faith and belief. it's ruby saying "there's no such thing as an afterlife" and julius coyly smiling at his love, knowing he's seen his father's soul take the journey there, but questioning the dream himself. it's the longer they live the more they have to accommodate in their mind for the complexities of the world and the human condition, and when ruby decides to give up her life for a goddess', she's not the same girl who laughed at her mates telling ghost stories, because she herself becomes one. as julius, who comforts himself after his wife's death by looking for a cure for it, becomes the protagonist of his very own haunting.
